Anyone who works out on carpet...

I do my workouts on our carpet and have pretty much destroyed it. It has started rippling because I've jumped on it so much with shoes on. Well, we are getting brand new carpet put in at the end of the month and I don't want to destroy it. Do any of you ladies who workout on carpet have any suggestions on how I can protect my carpet from getting destroyed?

Thanks,

Katie

Hi Katie,

How about interlocking puzzle mats? These are rubber squares that interlock much like puzzle pieces do. You can quickly set them up over your carpet prior to working out, and when you're done, they're easy to break apart, stack, and store.

Maybe some others will post on where you can find these. I've heard of them being available in packs of 6 squares at either home improvement store or children's furniture stores. I'm just going off what I remember, though. Hopefully you'll get more concrete info. from another member.

Good luck!

I work out on carpet and I can not wait for it to need replacing! lol I intend to talk DH into some type of hard floor for the room I exercise in...it's also our laundry room, computer room and storage room so there is no real need to have carpet in there...

I had picked up some type of puzzle matting at sports authority a couple of months ago because I don't like the fact that you can't slide on carpet but the matting moved around too much. I had to return it...:-( It sounds like it might have been a bit different from what was just suggested to you though.

I have been working out on the same scrap piece of berber carpet for the past 6 years and it is still in great shape. Now, this either means that it is great carpet or that I don't jump very hard!!:) :) I think it is really good carpet, because I do a lot of jumping and I'm not a petite 100 pounder!!! :)

Here is a link to a similar discussion earlier this year on flooring and puzzle mats. Hope it helps!

Berber carpet is great! It's very durable and it looks nice, too. When we had ours installed (at our last house) we learned that berber carpet requires, at the very minimum, 8# padding.

Our new house came with standard builder's carpet, but we upgraded the padding to 6#. So far it's held up very well, but when we replace it we'll definitely go with berber.

Good stuff. :)

What I do is I get a big piece of cheap rug and place it on top of the carpet when I exercise. I just roll the rug up when I am done. I got a 5' by 7' rug from IKEA for less than $30.

I'm either not workout out hard enough, or Berber is the best! My carpet isn't worn at all, but my step is, so I must be working.

I also do not do pivots on it - it doesn't work and I could see how that would be hard on it. I just sub it.

I work out on an area rug (over hardwood), and the rug is very worn from my workouts too. It wasn't a cheap rug either, and we have a rug pad under it. Well, I guess cheap is all relative. Maybe it is kinda cheap. I don't know. LOL! Anyway, I have the same problem you do - worn rug, what to do with it? I am considering ditching the area rug in the living room altogether - our hardwood floors are hickory and they are beautiful, so might as well let them show through (I just don't like walking on cold floors in the winter). Or, I was also thinking about the puzzle mats - I saw some at Target yesterday. And I know you can get them at Home Depot and a variety of other places. Word on the street (and by street, I mean various fitness forums), is that the puzzle mats are slippery and you need to wash them in soapy water first, to take the slick away. Otherwise they'll slide around on your carpet, and you'll slide around on them, and it'll be a big huge slide-fest, which is not conducive to working out. The other option is to get a very cheap area rug that can be rolled out just during your workouts, to protect your good carpet. Like someone else said, IKEA has cheap area rugs that would be great for just such a purpose. :)
