Anyone take a Calcium supplement?

Hey Ladies..... I'm currently taking a multivitamin and am starting Vitamin C; (thank you Wendy) and was wondering if I should be taking extra calcium. I am eating healthy and clean and have no joint problems as of yet. But I do a LOT of step workouts.

Any thoughts? I'm already 35 and wonder if I should be concerned about osteoperosis.

TIA!

If you are not getting 1200-1500 of calcium in your diet you should take a supplement. Of course lifting wts and doing cardio will help but you need the calcium for that to work.

Hey kali,

I had a physical last year and I am taking a multivitamin and and vitamin C. The doctor said because of being in my thirties that it is good to start taking a calcium pill. So I am taking Calcium with vitamin D pill.

It's a good idea for women to take calcium. But bones are built with other nutrients also: D helps calcium be absorbed, boron and other minerals (found in green veggies like kale) also contribute to bone strength.

I make a daily smoothie in which I put some powdered calcium citrate (one of the most digestible types) and also have some vegan calcium/vitamin D chews that I take on occasion, and some other calcium tablets.

Be sure not to take too much at once: your body can't handle more than around 500 mg. at once. And calcium carbonate can cause constipation.

Hi Kali! It looks like you have some great info on calcium supplements! I personally take Shaklee's because it has all the 'other' nutrients that you need in order to have bone building to occur. Their product is called Super Cal Mag Plus. It has calcium (in the form of dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate & calcium citrate), Phosphorus (essential for bone building to occur), Magnesium, D, K, Copper, Manganese, Zinc & Boron.

I like to take mine right before bed. Calcium is a natural muscle relaxer, so it helps me 'relax' to fall asleep. I put my tablets right next to my toothbrush so I don't forget to take them :)

Now that's a great idea (taking a calcium tablet right before turning in for the night!) Thanks!

Now I do take the calcium w/Vit. D tablets that my doctor prescribed. I also take a multi-vitamin pill every day, along with a Vit. E and a couple glucosamine/chondroitin gel caps every day. My joints and bones are quite happy with this (but it's also nice knowing osteoporosis doesn't run in my mom's family...just not taking any chances!).

Do the pills digest well if you take them that close to lying down?

Lydia: it's not only your mother's side of the family you have to worry about, I would think.

My dr. recommended I take 1500 mg a day, in 500 mg. doses 3 x a day. Your body cannot absorb more than 500 at a time. I described the dairy I eat and she said that took care of one dose. So I take a multivitamin which is one dose of 500. I take a calcium supplement at lunch or dinner for 500 mg. and then I let the calcium from food be my other dose. Geez, the things that I have to think about now that I am getting older!!

I do, too...Strictly because I don't eat dairy...In the morning I make my protein shake with soy milk (about 500 mg), vitamins with lunch (200 mg), calcium with snack (300 mg) and then my vitamins AND calcium again about 7 (500 mg total)...Of course I eat spinich, kale, almonds and stuff, too...I just don't count that in there (don't ask why, I just don't)...

Hey Kathryn. Well, I'm not taking 1200 mg worth right before bed. The tablets come in 200 mg, so I usually take 2 sometimes 3 right before bed. Because they are small and are not in one bulky tablet, they dissolve. I always like to do the vinegar test on my vitamins, just to make sure they are dissolving in 20 minutes. I did this to a calcium supplement I was taking before (I can't remember the brand name...it was from Walmart), anyway, that thing was so dense that it barely was dissolved in 20 minutes. I don't remember how many mg it had in it either. I threw them away when I figured out that they were not even dissolving.
