Anyone Here Interested in Starting a Yoga Checkin with Me?

lorajc

Cathlete
I don't really know how many Cathe ladies do yoga....but I do it a couple of times a week (wish I had time to do more). Anyone want to start a checkin? I know I've been talking with August on the CardioHaters check in and she seems to be interested in yoga.

I do mainly Vinyasa Flow/Power Yoga and recently starting doing Kundalini Yoga also (gonna try to fit this in in the evenings as an extra for my glands/organs/general health).

Anyone?

I love vinyasa flow yoga. I do the arobics one about once or twice a week. Need very much to do it more than that. Perhaps a check in will help with that.

Just put one out there and see.

Janie

The idea is to die young as late as possible.

Hi!

Lora, start it! Start it! :7

Urghhhh, it will be weeks before I more than ONE yoga DVD! x(

Oh, hi, Janie, long time!

No

Briee (but somehow I just know I'll get roped into it:7 :p )

That would be great.

I have been doing vinyasa for about a year - but only manage to get to it once a week - I also tried a hot yoga class recently and liked it.

What is Kundalini like?

Has anyone tried anusara yoga? What did you think?

RE: Anyone Here Interested in Starting a Yoga Checkin w...

YES! I have been waiting for someone to do this! Mind if I tag along? I have been doing power yoga off and on for about 6 years. I love Bryan Kest and especially Steve Ross (Inhale on Oxygen Network). I have also taken a variety of classes at a yoga studio near my house, but it closed. ('x(') I tend more toward cardio and weights these days, but have just added a week of yoga after I finish each rotation of 3 to 4 weeks that I am working on (currently doing Gym Style series). I have not done any Kundalini, but subscribe to Netflix-and it has a few yoga DVDs of that type available to rent. Would love to hear about how different it is! When will you be moving this discussion over to the check-ins board?

Thanks for posting and (hopefully) look forward to chatting with ya'll.

Megadoo - I'm wondering if I should still babble about yoga on our Hardcore Checkin also.....cuz I really do think it is beneficial to incorporate and if I quit babbling on our regular check in.....you ladies may all get too stiff.

Yvanna - Kundalini Yoga is a little strange and not everyone likes it. I'm mainly starting to practice it again to help some minor health problems I've been having. It works more on the glands and is therefore even more beneficial to the internal organs. Kundalini taps into all of the Chakras in your body - which are essentially energy centers located from the base of the spine to the top of the head .....I believe the Chakra center that is at the top of the head is the one in which your "aura" radiates from. It is believed that when one or more of your chakras are blocked, you can suffer from illness and disease. If you're really interested, a good book is called the Eight Human Talents by Gurumukh. Very interesting stuff. I started practicing it about 10 years ago....but then it fell by the wayside...cuz it's not a particularly strenuous type of yoga...and I didn't have time to do it. I mainly try to find time in the evenings to add it in and I'm going to start adding a bit on the weekends also. I just bought a bunch of stuff off of Raviana.com. There is quite a bit of discussion at Videofitness.com and there are reviews on Amazon.com of the Raviana DVDs. Breath of fire is also used in Kundalini yoga which is like a rapid deep breathing.....this oxygenates the blood quicker makes the poses more effective. I find it to make me feel better also.

Regarding the checkin.......I'm still trying to figure out how we should do this? Should we do it daily and if we don't do yoga that day, just report our weights/cardio workouts, etc and chit chat? I think this would be best since we will all be doing the yoga on different days of the week.

Thoughts??

RE: Anyone Here Interested in Starting a Yoga Checkin w...

I love astanga (power) yoga. I love Shiva Rea, Rodney Yee, and especially Beryl Bender Birch's dvd called "The Practice". I,too, liked doing Steve Ross on Oxygen until our cable lineup changed and we no longer get that channel.

I do yoga 3-6 times a week. I really feel differently on the days I don't do it. I notice I can run a lot better when I have done yoga the day before. I would be interesting in chatting with anyone who is into yoga! I would especially like to know if anyone else follows Beryl Bender Birch's yoga practice (she also has a book entitled "Power YOGA- The Practice")as I have found it to be physically challenging and yet very therapeutic. Anyone interested in chatting please let me know!

Oh - another thing about Kundalini is that they hold poses longer and they also do some chanting and mudras....but I usually skip those. They believe that when your tongue hits various meridians in your mouth speaking certain syllables, that it hits certain nerve endings.

Starla - I love Shiva Rea, Eion Finn and Rainbeau Mars. I mainly like vinyasa flow/ashtanga yoga....but I'm branching out a bit. Have you ever done a Mark Blanchard DVD? He's like the Cathe of Yoga!!! You can't even do most of his and consider it a recovery day. If I do one of his 90 min ones after doing Cathe....I've been known to shake and my legs feel like jelly. He's tough. I think his webiste is www.progressivepoweryoga.com.

RE: Anyone Here Interested in Starting a Yoga Checkin w...

Wow- thanks I am going to look that up! I love discovering new yoga tapes. I, too, like doing yoga as a "real workout" and not just a "recovery" day. I find it builds upper body strength in a much different way, and I love seeing the progression I am making in my poses, not to mention the increase in lung capacity. Let me suggest you look into Beryl Bender Birch. She has been teaching yoga for over 30 years and her program is amazing!:)

RE: Anyone Here Interested in Starting a Yoga Checkin w...

I'm game...I, too, need that extra motivation. I really enjoy yoga when I do it, and I definitely feel better. You'd think that would be motivation enough!

Let us know when you start it!

Thanks for the info - and all the sources to read about it. I am interested in exploring this further - so thanks again.

Daily sounds good - and yes - if we don't do it - we can talk about other activities.
