I'm with Aquajock and Kathryn and Clare on this one.
I sure hope I don't ignite anything here, but I have a fairly unusual perspective on this film and would like to just voice it here among (I hope) friends, as long as the subject has come up.
I am one half of a successful Christian-Jewish marriage in which neither spouse converted (and both of us are persons of great faith.) I am also the proud mother of two sons who have grown to be young men of strong and observant personal faith but who also have been taught to honor and respect all faiths and to look for commonalities in belief as opposed to differences. Our children feel emotional and intellectual curiosity about other faiths besides their own confirmed faith, and kinship and tolerance for people of other faiths. More so than many kids their ages, our sons are very conscious of, and find, the "thread" of God and faith in lots of issues in their lives. For me and my DH, I can't think of anything that could feel more deeply satisfying than knowing we have succeeded in instilling these values and traits into our sons. We're certainly not unique in having tried to teach our children these values -- they are not JUST the values of an interfaith home. It's just that in our home, without these core values we'd have no foundation in being who we are.
I don't doubt Mel Gibson's sincerity or his faith (which I admire, by the way), but his own statements and the pre-release hoopla certainly suggest to me that this movie presents a very specific traditionalist-faith point of view with which I would not agree. I have no desire to see a film that purports to teach me about religious absolutes. I would feel this way even if I hadn't just spent the last 25 years of my life in a very non-absolute environment -- but my personal disagreement with religious absolutism has certainly been cemented by the life I've led.
And, of course, the Christian-Jew controversy surrounding this movie frankly makes me very uncomfortable and is deeply, immensely saddening to me. I will breathe a big sigh of relief when the first "wave" of post-release commentary has come and gone, and I will hope that the movie doesn't create any lasting divisiveness between these two vital religious communities.
