Anyone given up sugar?

Shaz

Cathlete
I decided just over a week ago to give up sugar, and wondered if anyone has any experiences to share.

I've been reading Kathleen DesMaisons "Potatoes not prozac" and have also bought her next book on sugar addiction. I'm not trying to lose weight. Rather, I've been getting increasingly "foggy headed", which is making it very difficult to concentrate at work. I'm hoping that giving up sugar will help (I usually eat chocolate most days, and biscuits etc at weekends!)

I already do a lot of the other steps in the book (eg eat protein with meals), so I haven't gone through the steps one by one as outlined. I've had some sugar/chocolate cravings, but nothing too bad. I think I feel less "foggy", but its a bit too soon to tell.

Not sure about the idea of eating a potato before bedtime though. It just seems wrong eating carbs at that time. Anyone else do this? :)

Can't do it..won't even consider it! lol I quit smoking and have cut back FIERCLY on my caffeine/coffee intake...if I give up sugar I'll have nothing left to look forward to!;-)

I don't think I load up on it too badly anyway...

Have a great work out!

I smoked my last cigarette on March 17, 2004 at 10:00 pm!

I gave up sugar when I did the South Beach Diet last year. It was like anything else...hard in the beginning and easier as time went on. After the initial phase, I felt good without the sugar in my system. It was tough to stick with for me, since I love my sugar :) , but rewarding. It definitely coudl not be my "way of life!"

I have. Although I don't know if this potato at bedtime would work for me. :)

Seriously, if you want a sweet snack before bed there are so many options out there. There is sugar free ice cream. Sugar free cheesecake (this bakery near me makes an incredible sugar free cappucino cheesecake--7 carbs per serving). Sugar free Jello. Just to name a few. :9

I only use splenda and will not eat after 6pm. Plus you lose the most weight if you can go to bed with an empty stomach. I would only think of having a potatoe for breakfast, not any time else.

i, too, gave up sugar when i started eating the south beach way just over a year ago. i also gave up caffeine (diet mountain dew) at the same time! i had wicked DT's that first weekend! lol!

i/we use splenda. i don't eat potatoes due to their glycemic level... (converts to sugar)

i eat any time of the day (6 meals/snacks) and i do have my last snack between 8 and 9... i don't buy into the whole not eating after this or that time.. .calories in are calories in.. if i haven't taken in my alloted calories for the day.. just cuz i eat them at 9 p.m. doesn't make them worse for me or make them add up to more calories! the important thing is to keep my blood sugar level even...

cute work out clothes are good for AT LEAST an additional 10-15 calories burned!

Hi Maximus - Problem is, the author is against sweetners because she believes they prime the body to crave sweet things, and the idea is to end those cravings.

The potato before bed is supposed to increase serotonin ("happy hormone"), which is supposed to be low in people with sugar sensitivity symptoms (eg lack of concentration, mood swings, etc).

I am working on it now. I feel better in just a few days, but somehow manage to make my way back to it again. I've decided this time that enough is enough, I hate how it makes me feel. I struggle for the first 3-4 days, I'm struggling with a headace now, but it will pass. I should have laid off those Turtles. }(

Hi Sherry - I'd recommend the books I mentioned above. For me, they are helping with motivation. :)

Thank you, I just checked them out. I think the website is radiantrecovery.com (?). Motivation is a huge factor, I start to feel great, eat sweets, and then I'm back to square one. I know this is worth the effort simply because I've done it before and felt really great. Thank you again for the titles.
