Anyone from San Diego?

Hello!

I am traveling to San Diego for the first time next month and was wondering if any San Diego"ites" have any hotel recommendations. I'm going to visit my nephew who is in the Navy and just returned from 9 months in Iraq. I'm looking for something near the naval base or near El Cajon which is where he lives. We are going with another family who's money situation is tight so we have to budget. Doesn't have to be fancy but must be clean and would like a fridge & microwave. We planning to go to the zoo and tour the naval base & his ship. Also, if you have any other good "tourist" attractions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!!

Hi JJ,
I lived in SD for 6 years, but not close enough to El Cajon to suggest a good hotel. However, I do have some attraction suggestions.

The "Hotel Del" on Coronado island is beautiful, and is certainly worth checking out. The rest of Coronado is great too, with fun little shops and restaurants. For a taste of San Diego's great Mexican food and culture, stop in Old Town. The Old Town Mexican Cafe has a great atmosphere, with a Mariachi band and great margaritas. They don't take reservations, but you can watch people making fresh tortillas by hand while you wait. If you're downtown for dinner, check out Croce's, owned by the wife of musical great Jim Croce. The food's awesome, and they often have live music. You mentioned the zoo, but IMHO, the San Diego Wild Animal Park is even better. You really get to see the animals in a natural environment. Very neat. I know you'll be down south, but if you have time to head north of the city, you might try downtown La Jolla. The Cove (a small section of beach) is really, really beautiful, and the shopping in La Jolla is fabulous. Try Brockton Villa for breakfast or lunch. You can even sit on their enclosed balcony and watch the waves roll in. So lovely. If you're feeling more adventurous after brunch you can paraglide off the cliffs across from UCSD. I've never done it (too chicken), but hear that it's really fun.

Ooh, looks like I got a little carried away, but dang if I don't just love that city. Have a great time, and a big thanks to your nephew for defending our country!

Hi,

I'm not from San Diego, but I was just there a few weeks ago, my sister lives in El Cajon - what a conincidence!! Definately visit Old Town, Seaport Village, San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park (awesome!) My sister suggests the Ha Penny Inn (off 2nd Street) in El Cajon. All rooms come with a full kitchen and very very reasonable. Rooms are clean and well kept. Hope this helps.

Take care,

Iris

Just wanted to add that Sea World is another great option, you may want to check that out. If money is an option just try and stay outside of San Diego, it may be a bit cheaper. There is also a restraunt in Old Town called Coyote Cafe, really good food with hand made tortillas. You may also want to to the the Gas Lamp District which is also downtown San Diego.

If you like shopping thre is an outlet in Carlsbad.

Have fun,

Terri

Thank you Kate, Debbie, Iris & Terri for your posts. I really appreciate you taking the time to pass on your recommendations. It is hard when you travel to an area you know nothing about. I now have a checklist started of places to stay, visit, and eat(love mexican food). I'll pass along your kind "thanks" to my nephew. I'm so proud of him and glad to have him back safe & sound.
