anyone else have this problem buying clothes?

I am 5'5", petite to average build, long torso, short legs. I have a relatively small waist, but wouldn't describe my body type as a pear, either. I cannot, for the life of me, find pants that fit. If something fits in the hips and thighs, it is generally way too big in the waist, even more than a belt could help. If I go down a size, things are usually too short in the "crotch" area. I'm getting extremely frustrated!

Does anyone else have this problem, and if so, what brand of clothing do you wear?

Oh I hear ya! I too have short legs and long torso. I'm more like a ruler, not much of a difference between my waist and hips. My butt sticks out, hamstrings are flat (so there is always a big gap in that area), and my quads are round. Forget the jeans labeled stretch... I have two pair of jeans that fit pretty well, one is from Limited Too and the other is IEO (something like that) from JC Penny (short leg). I've also had luck in the past from Lands End.
It's been suggested to me to just wear skirts.

Yes!!!! I have this exact same problem!!!!! I have broad hips and a small waist (I'm an hourglass shape), and am 5'2". There is no particular brand that I would say fits well all the time, because different styles within the same brand will fit completely differently. I just have to experiment. I have the best luck with lower-rise pants. Not ultra-low-rise look-at-my-underwear pants. Just pants that sit below the natural waistline. Straight-leg and wide-leg pants tend to work better because they are roomier through the hips, but I don't always like that style. I have some jeans I got from JC Penney that fit really well - they are bootcut jeans made by St John's Bay. They were dirt cheap too. And I have a few pairs of pants from Ann Taylor LOFT that fit pretty well too. It's a pain having to try on hundreds of pairs of pants before finding something that works - so when I do find something, I usually buy like 3 or 4 of them in different colors. You gotta take advantage of those opportunities! :D

Michele S,

I have the same problem with pants fitting in the thigh area or the waist band sticking out too far. It is very annoying. I have a small waistline, hips are decreasing, but the sweep in my thighs are thick, they're not quite like Jai's but getting there, and the BUTT is still a genetic booty, but getting better.

I think what we have to do is buy a pair that's one size too big and have it altered, but then there'e the cost to have it done x(. If you have another solution please pass it on.

This is why I need a job where I can just wear my w/o clothes everyday :+

That would be a dream come true! :D I have a job where I have to wear slacks. Ugh. I have 3 pairs of slacks that fit alright and so I am always wearing those same 3 pants with different tops. People are probably like "Why doesn't this woman buy some more pants?" Believe me, I've tried!!!

I have the same problem. I usually buy my pants from Casual Corner or Petite Sophisticates. Sometimes I find stuff from Talbot's. Lee jeans are also friendly to my body, although sometimes their 4's are a bit roomy for me but their 2's, a bit snug. It's a matter of finding the right cut. Sometimes I have to buy a junior's size 5.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I went shopping today and was actually able to find two pair of capris that fit pretty good. They're by INC - Macy's carries them. I still need a belt to pull it all "together" but they're the best I've found in a long time. I asked the salesperson for every color that style came in - fuschia and khaki - but at least it's a start!

I bought my son shorts today at the Gap that have an adjustable waistband. Why can't they make that for women!?!

I have the same problem, and one thing that has helped me is to look for pants that have some lycra or spandex in them. That way you get a little bit of "give" in the hips and thighs, but the fabric "clings" a bit in the waist. But there are a lot of pants I just can't wear.x(

I have the exact same problem. I have to try on about 50 pairs of pants to find 1 that fits. I had luck with the jeans at Old Navy last year. I went back this year, and they fit completely differently (and not in a good way). It's frustrating. And forget about ordering from a catalog. Why can't the manufacturers get it through their heads that we're no all built straight?
