Anyone else have keratosis pilaris?

Before I knew what it was, I'd always refer (ruefully!) to it as "permanent goose bumps." If anyone else has this (and you know it if you have rough-feeling skin with bumps that are always there), have you found any exfoliators that actually work? I've heard of some, but before spend a lot, I'd like to know if anyone's found success with a product.

Many thanks, everyone!

Susan,

Where do you experience this? I have something like "permanent goosebumps" on the backs of my arms. I wonder if it could be this crazy "keratosis pilaris" thing. Hmmm...

I use a body scrub with salicylic acid and a bath poof to keep my ams under control. It works most of the time.

:)

I don't but DD and DH does. She uses a cream the dermatologist gave her to control it which works pretty well. I'll ask her what it is. I think the dermatologist called her folliculitis, but this sounds like the same thing.

Hi, Becky.

It's most concentrated on the outsides of my knees, but it's also on the backs of my arms. Most disheartening, isn't it? I believe I'll follow what the others suggested and get my dermatologist to recommend something helpful (since I'm going to her to have cancerous patches removed meanwhile). :(

Thanks to all who responded!

This condition has plagued me since childhood. I HATE it!!! I've tried many things (including prescription creams and ointments), but found that Paula's Choice BHA body lotion works the best. I haven't tried retin-A, though, so that might work even better.

Oh my gosh! I have this! For me, it fades and comes back. I noticed it once after working out, as I was making my notes I was sitting in front of the mirror. I thought I needed more vitamins or something.
Thanks for the pictures Becky.

I've battled with it for years as well. I found alot of help for it on this dermatology website called dermadoctor.com.

Here's a great article on KP:
http://www.dermadoctor.com/pages/newsletter51.asp?WID={19B597CD-4113-41B0-A813-481EB8ABA977}

I use the following products and I love them.

I start with this:
http://www.dermadoctor.com/product.asp?productid=369&WID={19B597CD-4113-41B0-A813-481EB8ABA977}

Followed by this:
http://www.dermadoctor.com/product.asp?productid=368&WID={19B597CD-4113-41B0-A813-481EB8ABA977}

Then I moisturize with this:
http://www.dermadoctor.com/product.asp?productid=850&WID={19B597CD-4113-41B0-A813-481EB8ABA977}

I have seen a real difference in my skin since I started using these products. The backs of my upper arms are much smoother. You can also do dermabrasion but I haven't felt a need to do that yet.

Wow, Michele and everyone who responded, what a wealth of information! One tends to feel alone and frustrated with KP, but I see that I'm not alone having it! It's more an annoyance than anything else, and envy of smooth-skinned people.

Thanks again for your helpful responses!

WAnting to immediately jump in on this conversation!!

My daughter has this condition on her cheeks. At first we thought it to be mild acne, but after taking her to the dermatologist was found to be KP. He told her mild soap (dove, neutrogena...) followed by moisturizing. Well, this doesn't work.

I spent the 30 bucks for the KP duty from Dermadoctor, and it doesn't work. Sunlight DOES work, but we know the other condition that can lead to (skin cancer).

Here is an article i found most helpful, i check for more people's posts here often. It has helped me also know what NOT to use. Skin care products can be very expensive. Make sure to scroll down and read reviews of this article, as this is where other people voice their products that work/didn't.

Hi Wendyjpa,

I use the KP Duty on my upper arms and I find that it works very well for me, however, I use it in conjunction with a scrub and a body wash (see my earlier post in this thread). Also, I am a 50 year old woman and you may not want to use such strong products on the delicate skin of a child. Have you considered submitting a question to Dr. Kunin? I have emailed her with questions and she has always responded. HTH. Also, thanks for the epinions link.

These bumps have bothered my as long as I can remember! I just recently discovered that there was actually a name for them and just how many other people have them. I can make the bumps disappear (but I still have scars form them) by using a physical exfoliant (I use a pumice stone) followed by salicylic acid (BHA). Be sure to let the acid work for 30 minutes before applying any other product that would change the pH and make it ineffective. It's a simple routine and it is the only thing that works for me.
