Anyone do their own acrylic nails?

I LOVE my acrylic nails, and have never had any problem going to the salon in my neighborhood...until I got fungus on 2 nails :(

I will get them removed and let them heal, and am thinking I would rather do them myself so I know they are done cleanly and properly. I have a steady hand, so I think I can do them.

What products are best, and do you need to be a nail tech to buy them?

I don't know, . . maybe because I'm such a low key no make up, pony tail girl I've never been one for acrylic nails. They sorta scare me. Mostly I would worry about chipping a nail after spending so much time and money on them. When I paint my nails I always have the short nail thing going on. Now that you mention fungus, . . .well they scare me even more. My friend does them for cheap by going to a beauty school where they need people to practice on.

Govtgirl...I have been a licensed manicurist sine 1989 and have done my own nails now and before I was licensed. I am not a fan of acrylic due to the fungus issues which usually generates from the liquid monomer used IMO.

I use a combo of fiberglass (which is a wrap) and crystal (crystal being acrylic powder and glue). They can be tough to do starting out but as I have done my own for so long I do not find it hard.

I only use products I can get as a tech. But I have seen many products out there that you can buy. The kits seem inexpensive and probably work well. It just takes some practice...:)...HTH!

Carole, yes that does help a lot, thanks! I don't have to have acrylic nails necessarily, just nails! :p I had never before gotten a fungus at this salon, but the regular girl that did them seems to do more management now and less manicures, and now a guy there does them :(

My hands look so much nicer with longer nails, and my own just will not stay looking nice. I will look into the fiberglass kind, thanks again!
