Any YMCA members?

Hi Cathe-ites. Do any of you belong to your local YMCA? We've always joined our local rec center for summer time activities for the kids, but this year there are not that many exciting options. I'm thinking of heading out to our Y to see what they offer. My only problem is that it's about 30 minutes from where I live (rec center is only 8). But if it's got good kids amenities and programs, I'm thinking it may be the better alternative. Anyone know if they offer good summer programs (my local branch doesn't have its summer calendar together yet so I'll be looking more at the facility than anything else I guess.) TIA

Lorrie

I'll be walking the Komen 3-day (60 miles) the week after Cathe's RT. To view my webpage or make a donation go to:

Our Y has great summer programs. They have great programs all year round here. Maybe you could call or look on their website or go in and talk to them. HTH

Hi Lorrie - I've been at the Geauga Y for about a year and a half and I really like it.

In the summer, they have weekly sports camps for the kids (ages 6-12). My boys did one week last year and really liked it. They also have tot camp for ages 3-5 and I've heard that is really good. My daughter is going to try it this summer - you can choose 2, 3 or 5 mornings a week.

I'm not crazy about their pool - I think it's too small for the amount of members they have there.

As far as classes in the summer, you can look at the classes scheduled for spring and they should be pretty similar to the summer classes, but the sessions are shorter - I think they are 5 weeks rather than 8.

It's a great place. I'm lazy and don't like to drive that far so I wouldn't use if it was 30 minutes away, but that's just me.

If you have any other questions about our Y, feel free to ask.

ETA - I like their fitness classes, too!

I do primarily step and joined the Y. I found the classes to be boring!!!! This one girl did the same basic routine for at least 2 months. They had no aerobic floor and classes were held in the gym. The final straw for me was the lack of air conditioning. In July it was impossible to exercise. I did not use the pool. Check it out before you sign up. The experience really helped me find Cathe. There was just no comparison!

This really depends on your local Y. When I lived in VA there were very few private gyms so the Ys were fabulous, state of the art health clubs. They offered a variety of adult exercise options & a ton of kids programs. The only thing that bothered me about them was they didn't open until 1:00 on Sundays, which surprised me--obviously it was b/c of religion but keeping me from exercising certainly didn't induce me to go to church. :p Although perhaps it was consideration for their staff.

Here in NJ the Y is teeny tiny, has absolutely no exercise equipment or classes, & is really geared toward family/child oriented programs.

So, a long way of saying you just have to check it out in person. :)

I'm not a member, but our local Y has a lot of nice programs. I take my daughter there for swim lessons and they've got a beautiful pool. I think their family membership is a bit pricey, because you have to pay for the progams too. There's a slight discount for members, but not enough for me to think it's worth it.

I do think it's a great thing for families.

Our small town has a fantastic Y, but we don't have any large gyms and that may be a contributing factor. The large town 45mi away has gyms and a really tiny Y. The best thing about the Y for kids is all the sport activities. Ours has soccer, flag football, swim team, cheerleading and more. Coaches have the right attitude - supportive - no screaming at the kids for screw ups! The city runs our baseball league and man! some serious competativeness there! Marnie

Lorrie - one more thing about the Geauga Y is that the fitness room does get crowded and it's hard to get a machine during peak hours.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm going to try to get out there over the next few days and check it out. Erica do you work out more at home or at the Y? I've got all my Cathes and a smattering of other workouts along with a treadmill and elliptical. I guess I never really envisioned me working out there, just more for the kids' programs. But now that you brought it up - hmmmmmm.

We were members of our local Y for years. One word of advice: When you sign your kids up for a program, be sure to ask who will be teaching it? Our Y only hires local teens to 'coach' the kids and it is a recipe for money wasted. I have had my kids in various programs and it always ends up with the teens standing around gossiping with each other and the kids are just running around and things get extremely out of control. Hopefully this is not the situation at your Y, but ask to be sure. And also make sure you stay and observe what is going on during the program.

We no longer put our kids in the Y programs. We now go to another town where adults supervise/coach the sports/swimming programs through their parks department.

Lorrie - I exercise more at home. I run outdoors whenever possible and use the Y for back-up cardio for when I can't run. I have a spin bike, but that's so boring for me. I use the weight machines there also as add-ons to my home workouts. It's nice, though, because I can do heavier lower body work at the Y with their squat racks.

I do love most of the fitness classes they have there. They are lots of fun and most of them have a good intensity - great for variety from your workouts at home.

Let me know what you think of the facility and if you join! I'm jealous of your treadmill and elliptical!:)
