Jerry,

C25K is a good plan to work up to running three miles. My only advice would be to start slow and get a GREAT pair of running shoes. If you can, go to a running store and have them "measure" you and recommend a pair that is right for your gait, foot type, etc. I didn't do either of those things when I started the C25K and my "reward" was plantar fasciitis!! I am now just starting back to jogging/running a little. I don't think I will ever be able to run three miles straight, but I feel good just pumping it up for a minute or so at a time during workouts. After years and years of smoking (quit over a year ago), my cardiovascular endurance just isn't where it should be.

Good luck!

Hey Jerry. Welcome to the world of putting one foot in front of the other! :)

My first and best suggestion would be a great pair of shoes. It's worth the extra money to prevent injuries. Besides that, just KEEP ON TRUCKIN'!

Make a daily jog over to my beach house and then get a drink of water (it's in the fridge) regroup, and run back to your place!!!! :D:D:D:D:D

I agree - start with a great pair of shoes. Set a goal for yourself...be it distance or time. Enjoy your surroundings and just relax into it. Sign up for a 5K and train for it. WAY TO GO! Running is great.

The cool running site used to be THE running site. It was very popular. But then 'they' decided to improve(??) it and unfortunatly 'they' ruined it. So a lot of the people that posted at coolrunning moved to this site:

They have a better forum (than the CR forums,IMO) and there is a lot of knowlegable people over there if you want to become involved in a forum geared more to running. BUT don't think for one minute Mr. that you can abandon us here at the Cathe forums. ;)

The C25k plan is still a good plan and after you graduate from that if you desire you can go on to the 5K, 10k, 1/2 Marathon to full marathon plans.

a few little items to remember

This stuff may seem obvious so forgive me if you think its too simplistic.

ipod shuffle with some of those podrunner podcasts. sunscreen (even in winter.) lip balm. sun visor/hat. sweat band to keep the sweat out of your eyes. sunglasses that don't just slide off. ear buds that wrap around your ears (regular ones seem to fall off.) And depending on how cold it is where you are I use a pair of knit gloves to keep the fingers warm and a hoody to keep warm. Heart rate monitor is helpful too.

The shoes are critical but I see that has already been mentioned. Being warm is really important. Walk then run or jog. Side stitches seem to happen when I'm cold. But just stopping makes it worse because then the body gets colder.

I hope this helps.
