Antidepressants......do they make you fat?

Wondering if there is any correlation between weight gain and anti-depressant use. I just quit all mine a few weeks ago and wonder (HOPING) if I can expect any weight loss, however minimal. Anyone????
I have been on Lexapro, Wellbutrin for a very short time, and Prozac most recently.

Thanks!!

I don't think it's a good idea to just stop taking antidepressants. There are enough variations on the market that you can work w/ a clinican to make sure you get one that will work well for your body. It is not true that they all make you gain weight, though there are some that are more predisposed to weight gain than others. I advise that you talk to whomever prescribed your medication for other ideas.

Ok, thing is...........I HATE my shrink. She doesn't know me. Ok.........problem is, I think I have run out of psych bennies for the calendar year. I just started a new job and hope to get a full time position in about a month so maybe bennies there. I want to get a second opinion, go somewhere else. The meds were making me so sleepy and so anorgasmic that it was horrible. But, since quitting them, especially this week, I have been pretty despondent and extremely irritable. But, I just started my new job, have the normal school stress, and my dad is sick...plus the holidays. So again.......we sit here and go, "Is it cutting the meds off?" or "Is it just normal stress for what I am going through". Once again, I can only guess...

Can I take some herb or something? Something that doesn't interfere with my BCP. Can't get PG cuz I just had a MMR shot.....

Janice, they can but the studies are conflicting and not everyone will react to them the same way. Nik gained I won't even tell you how much on Paxil and it took going through three psychologists before I found one who believed me and told me she'd never be able to take it off on her own, no matter what she did "right". He put her on Zoloft and she lost ten pounds in two weeks. She's fine now on it and the weight loss is slow, but it's happening. Sometimes it's a matter of trial and error.

I agree it's not a good idea to just stop them on your own. You can put yourself into a lot of physical and mental trouble that way. Talk to your doctor about the weight gain concerns and if you don't like the answer he/she gives you, change doctors if you can.

Hope it all works for you!

Hi Janice,

I haven't searched deep enough on your Lexapro, but one of the side effects of Wellbutrin is weight changes. It is supposed to clear out of your systme in 2 weeks after you stop taking it, according to The Pill book. My Quick Look Drug Book doesn't list the contraindications for either one. If you want I will look further.

I have read though, that antidepressants can increase your weight because one may be eating more than they realize. One is more relaxed and so they eat. Certainly not to suggest this is your case, this is just something I read recently.
However, the Wellbutrin is supposed to be an appetite suppressant and it works on the hormone system in your brain.
Did you stop taking these antidepressants cold turkey, or did you discuss it with your doctor? My med book says it can cause some side effects by sudden withdrawal. Your doctor may suggest a tapered withdrawal dose. ???

Congratulations on your new job. I just graduated from MT schooling and I am in process of job testing. I got one offer, but I have 35 pages of companies to look at. I want to be sure I find the right one.

Janice, have you seen the 10-day diet that comes with Turbo-Jam? email me if you would like to know about it. [email protected]

You're gonna make it. You are a strong lady. I'm rootin' for ya.
(((hugs)))

I gained weight when I started taking Effexor years ago. I didn't lose when I went off of it, though. I gained again when I started back up on it a few months ago -- ten pounds. Again, I didn't lose spontaneously. I had to work at it, but I have lost most of it.

Sorry, Janice, but no. I've heard of people gaining weight on Paxil, but not Lexapro or Prozac. I'm no expert though.

Janice,

I was on Lexapro for a few months at the beginning of my marathon training. I gained about 12 pounds...even though I was training.

I lost a few at first and then I gained. I heard it's common to gain about 5-8 pounds while your marathon training because of water retention, glycogen in the muscles and what not. But, I think the Lexapro had something to do with it too. I mean 12 pounds is a lot for me.

I'm not on Lexapro anymore though. I'm doing fine and have lost about 8 of those pounds.

Good luck!

I've been on 2 SSRs for a year now and haven't gained any weight.

My psychiatrist said something of interest before I began taking these meds. I asked him the typical, "Will these make me fat?" and he said, "Yes and No." He clarified that with, "Why are you going to take meds? Because you're anxious and nervous all the time. Those things often result in pacing, bouncing around the house, etc. When you're on the meds and more relaxed, however, you may expend fewer calories." Then he said that someone who is vigilant about exercise and their weight will probably remain active, thus refrain from weight gain. And in my case, he was right. I may not have as many freak fests as before, but I still take the stairs in lieu of the elevator, I park in the rear of parking lots, and I workout with Cathe 6 days a week.

In fact, when I began taking my current medications I lost weight but I was shaky and had a constant headache. He lowered the dosage and I went back to my pre-med weight and it hasn't fluctuated at all since. That was about 11 months ago.

I actually lost weight on Wellbutrin - but it gave me horrid headaches.

I gained no weight with Zoloft either, but that one zaps your sex drive. No thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jillybean...........

You are probably right. The antidepressants made me so tired too that all I wanted to do is sleep!! Plus, I haven't been working out. Gotta start working out again, that is where the weight loss lies.

Thanks for the info guys! :)

I lost weight on Prozac. I took it for eating disorders and I think it raised my serotonin levels so that I wasn't craving carbs so much. The effects of the Prozac wore off, though, and I ended up taking Paxil for a short time and gained weight.
