Another Running Question

Mic

Cathlete
I've been running for about 5 or 6 months so I'm still a beginner runner, however, since I've started I've been going with consecutive days of running and then taking a few days off. The reason being it works better with my kids schedule and with the weather the way it is here sometimes it seems like the worse will hit towards the end of the week, not always. Anyway I'm slowly building up mileage, nothing to fast and I don't seem to be having any problems. Here's the question, does anyone else run several days in a row and then take a few days to do something else?

This is what I do:

Saturday -run long
Sunday - yoga (just recently added this and LOVE it!) and legs
Monday - non running cardio and upper body weights and abs
Tuesday - run and lower body weights
Wednesday - non running cardio and uppper body weights and abs
Thursday - run
Friday - run and legs and abs

So, I run three days in a row (Thurs, Fri and Sat) and then on Tues. I also have an issue of getting the runs in around my 4 year old daughter's needs and this is how it all fits.

I think it's great to do that. Your legs will be nice and fresh after the break which should make your runs easier. Plus, you reduce the risk of any overuse injury also.

I tend to run a lot of consecutive days just because it's my favorite cardio activity, but I definitely notice a difference in my legs after some time off from running.

Congratulations on being consistent and building up your mileage!:)

That is the great thing about running, (if the weather is good) you can fit it in anywhere! I think your schedule is fine! For me it always depends what I am training for. Right now I run Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri and Sun. But I am training for a marathon so I might ultimately add Wed...:)...Carole

I am training for a 1/2marathon. some of the sites only call for 3 days of running. I feel I should do no less than 4 days a week. what do all you runners think? and also I do spin class and bootcamp2x week. I dont want to overtrain but I want to feel good during this one. Last yr I felt sluggish the entire run. I only ran 3days week for that one. I used a training p;rogram from runners world. this yr I am using jeff galloway and hal higdons. kind of combining the two.

Hi Laura...its been awhile since I've trained for a half marathon. But try running 4 days a week, one spin class and one Bootcamp and see how that works. Galloway and Higdon have great programs to follow also. I have found over the years I have run that you have to experiment to see what works. It might be good also to get in one rest or stretch day...When is your half?...:)...Carole

In may. i am doing the cleveland, ohio 1/2 again this yr. Yeah a friend of mine thought only 1 day of bootcamp also. He said that can be very intense on the legs and with needing to run a bit more you dont want to over train your legs .My bootcamp class is very intense, more so than cathe's bootcamp workout. I really love the class and dropping down to 1 day a week will be hard for me since I have been taking it for a year now at our ymca. Thanks for your suggestions, I appreciate any help I can get. I really want to improve my times this yr. My last 1/2 I finished in 2 hrs 11min. I want to finish in 2hrs this yr,hopefully and drop; my 5k times also.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question, it helps me to feel more secure with what I'm doing. It's amazing how well you think some days when you run. It's really growing on me. Thanks again.
