Another question about spinning...

Hi all....

My question is: Can spinning tapes be used with a recumbant bike? I've never done a spinning class, so I am completely unfamiliar with "spinning". If it is possible, can anyone recommend one or two spinning tapes?

Thanks!!!

Hollie

Hi Hollie,

Spinning does involve out-of-the-saddle work but I don't think that should deter you. There are plenty of recumbent cyclists on the road & they manage just fine. You just won't have as many options.

An indoor video involves climbs (lower cadence & higher tension) & flats (faster cadence & less tension). Using a video is much more stimulating than Headline News or some trash tv (though a favorite CD isn't bad).

I'll let someone else post their favorite videos. All things equal, a workout with less time out of the saddle (on the video) would be better for your situation.

Debra,
Don't recumbents use slightly different muscles than the recumbents? Thought I read that somewhere.
Hope you are well
Trevor

I think you use more hamstring & glute on the recumbent but it's still a heck of a lower body workout that's easier on the lower back. I imagine you'd have a lower heart rate since you're semi-horizontal. Have you noticed that when you use them at the gym?

I'm feeling great now. Thanks for asking.

I didn't chime in before, but I too would love to see pictures of the birthday boy & his running brother. Do you get a chance to do some training runs with Mathew?

Thanks, Debra!!! I appreciate your reply. I'm hoping there will be some specific recommendations for spinning tapes that I could do in a recumbant bike. Perhaps someone has an idea or two....

Mindy and Jay are two great picks

Hollie, I know there are folks that have used the spin videos with their recumbants so it has been done;-).

As far as videos go, my favorite rides are Jay's Precision Cycling...which you can find in the Collage video catalog and Mindy's Sport Cycle that you can find at her site..oohh, and I forget the site..but if you type in her name and .com(MindyMylrea.com) it will default you there..and I think it's on sale for $10.

Both do feature standing sections but they also work with the tension enough to keep you interested and feeling like your part of the workout. Both instructors have great personalities. Mindy's tape is a bit older and the production isn't as fresh..but still a winner. Jay's has a polished look and a great crowd on bikes behind him.

Video Fitness has some reviews of both..pretty sure I wrote one on Mindys.

IMHO, they are the two best spin videos out there now. Not that there are a lot of choices.

Excellent!!!!!!!

Thank you, NancyC! I wrote those down, and I will be looking into those in the near future. I have a CIA tape with Mindy Mylrea -- Slammin' Sports Cardio. Whoa...what a workout! And she cracks me up!! I get to laughing, and I can barely keep up with the workout. :) I appreciate the recommendations very much.

Hey Debra!
I'll see if I can round up some pics to send you.
I don't run with Matthew....he has 6 days a week of practice with the team and rests on his off day which is Sunday.
It's been awhile since I used the recumbent bike so I couldnt answer as far as differences in heart rate.
What's the toughest part of spinning for you? Mine is standing sprints!! Legs feel like jello during this. lol!
Trevor :)
