Hi Everyone,

DH just found out that his job is sending him to Annapolis, MD in July '06. Does anyone live there or know anything about this area?
Any information would be greatly appreciated :) !

Cath:)

p.s. DH is laughing at me because I used his Street Atlas program to figure out how far we will be from Cathe! heehee! It looks like it will only be about 2 hours!:) :) :)

Hi Cath,

I probably shouldn't respond to your post because I really don't know a thing about Annapolis, except that my DH attended a meeting there once and said it was absolutely beautiful.

From everything I've been told, it's rich with history (lots of military history), and there are several museums and histoic homes you can go through, lots of little shops, etc. My husband said the historic district is very quaint and pretty.

I was really disappointed when I couldn't go with my DH--everyone who attended that meeting said they had a wonderful time and they loved the city. HTH and I wish you and your family my very best for your move.

Michele

Thanks so much Michele!
I am so glad that you posted! It makes me excited to see this new place! I am planning on doing some internet searches this weekend.
Thanks again!

Cath,

I live in Virginia but go to Maryland somewhat regularly. The whole area is absolutely gorgeous. You'll be in a great location to travel, too. Drive for 45 minutes and you'll be in Harper's Ferry, WV. An hour or so to Amish areas of Pennsylvania. And like you said, just two short hours to Cathe!

I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of Annapolis in particular but I highly recommend this area. Except for the traffic...

Oh Cath, I'm so jealous!! DH is military and he works in DC. We live in MD, but not a part that I like. I would give anything to be in Annapolis. It is so quaint and nice. Great restaurants. It reminds me of Newport, RI a little bit. I am counting the days until we get to leave here. If I were in Annapolis, I'd be sad to go. Good luck to you!! :)

I also second Annapolis! I grew up in MD and lived in Baltimore for 5 of those years. I was in Annapolis quite a few times for work as well. It is very quaint - has some cute stores and great restaurants. Great spot for a romantic dinner. DH and I love Griffin's, right on the water. We had our second date there ;) If you want to know anything more, give me a yell!

Wow thanks so much Michele, Becky, Penguinchick, and Debbie! It is so helpful to get an idea ahead of time what to expect.

I am really getting excited now about moving! I just emailed the school district in the area for information about working there.

Penguinchick--my DH is in the Military as well. He is excited to see the Naval Academy!

Thanks again so much!

Cath:)

Hi Cath
Annapolis is great! (I actually live about 15 minutes from there). You will love it. It is so pretty, I love walking around the downtown area. I love the restaurants, especally great if you like crabs and other seafood.

Good Luck!

Also you will be very close to Cathe. When I order DVDs they usually come either the next day or the day after :)

Thanks Noelle!
I love that I'll be so close to Cathe! My husband will be working near the Naval Academy I think. Do you know of any neighborhoods that might be fairly close to that area? We will only be there for one year (we think!) so we will be renting an apt. or house.
Thanks again!
Cath :)

Oh you will just love it. I went to undergrad about 30 minutes from Annapolis (I actually took my GREs at the naval academy LOL), & we went there quite often to enjoy the night life, shop, etc. In the downtown they've maintained a lot of the cobblestone streets & the shopping is awesome. Also it is, of course, the capital of MD so there's always lots going on.

When I was looking to relocate from VA Annapolis was my second choice behind NJ. Now I'm really jealous of you! :)

The Naval Academy and the historic parts of Annapolis are surrounded by great residential areas. Within all price ranges. And it depends if you want water access, a rural feel, or close to shopping. I'd suggest talking to a real estate agent from the area (of if your DH's company is re-locating them, they may be providing assistance.) Or a week-end trip to the area could give you an idea of the surrounding communities!

LauraMax- Thanks! This downtown area sounds like a neat place! Can't wait to see it! That is funny that you took your GRE's at the Academy!
FirmDancer-That is a great idea to contact a real estate agent. I think DH would like a fairly short commute and I'd love to be able to walk to places rather than drive if possible. Thank you!
Mariela-Thank you for checking too!

Gosh, I really appreciate everyone's input! I can't wait to do some more research this weekend...

Cath :)

I am certainly no expert, as I've only visited Annapolis once, but it was great! The downtown area is so quaint and fun. We ate a great meal there, and did some awesome shopping. One thing I remember is that one of my favorite clothing stores "White House/Black Market" has a SALE store there in the downtown area. Their clothes are really cute, and of great quality! In this particular store, everything was on sale... really good deals! I'd go back just to shop that store! :p

I'm going to echo what everyone else said. You will love it there. You are right by the Chesapeake Bay and the Ocean (Ocean City Maryland is a fun place), the food is incredible if you like seafood (nothing like those blue crabs!!) and there is so much to do in that area. Annapolis itself is gorgeous and chock full of history. Then DC is near by as is Baltimore (I love the Inner Harbor). Shopping is great, the schools are very good, and the people are friendly. Have a blast. I live in California now, but I used to live in Maryland. I wanted to move to Annapolis.

PS - you'll notice when you meet people from out of state they will say "Hmm, you're from Maryland? I drove through there one time." So many people see Maryland only via I-95. They are missing alot.
