Hi.
Does anyone out there have good tips on strengthening ankles? It's actually for my husband, who, like me, enjoys trail running. But he has had lots of problems with his ankles and wants to know how to get them stronger.

Oh. And by the way, does any one know of better on-line shops to purchase ADVANCED videos than Collage? (Other than Cathe, of course).

THANKS in advance.

Advanced Videos

Hi Laura,

I'm sorry I don't have any ideas on strengthening ankles, but I've had good luck with purchasing videos from g&rvideos.com (I believe this is it, I"ll double check. I purchased 3 CIA videos from them on a Fri night and I received them in the mail on Monday!!! Good Luck with the ankles.

Ooops!!!

Sorry Laura, here the correct address for gandrvideo.com. you may also want to try ciavideo.com. I've never used this sight though. Good Luck.

ankle strengthening tips

Laura, I really wrecked my ankles with multiple sprains when I was younger (how I managed to be so accident-prone as an adolescent is more than I can comprehend!). Anyway, I had a mild sprain last April and decided I was going to HAVE to rehabilitate and STRENGTHEN my ankles so they don't become a permanent problem. The best thing to do, and you can do it anywhere, is just balance on one foot at a time. I do this in line at the bank, in line at the grocery store, etc. Just raise one foot off the ground and balance on the other! Your foot and ankle do a LOT of wiggling and adjusting and it strengthens them very nicely. Once you've mastered the balancing on one foot thing, add calf raises. Balance on one foot, raise on to the toe, lower the heel to the floor again, raise onto the toe again, etc. This will REALLY strengthen the ankles. Two other helpful rehab exercises are 1) trace the alphabet in the air with your big toe, making the letters as BIG as possible to get a full range of motion. I do this with both feel while I'm in a recliner watching TV (should I admit that I watch TV in a recliner? I know that all of the rest of you probably do jumping jacks and crunches or something. . .

). 2) (I don't really do this one regularly anymore) Place a book on a towel on the floor. With your heel on the floor and your toes on the edge of the towel, use your TOES ONLY to grab the towel and pull the book closer. Repeat until you've pulled the towel so far toward you that you can touch the book with your toes. Sorry so long-winded, hope this helped. -susan p
