And we wonder why obesity in our kids?

Oy vey!!

I am glad though that they are working to remove the policy. Good for the Mom that she didn't back down.

I am dealing with my own issues at my son's middle school and sometimes it seems those bureaucrats throw their common sense down the Grand Canyon and just go by the letter of a policy or a law which wasn't intended that way. On the other hand, with our law suit filing-happy society, it's not easy - damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I'm continually repulsed that our law-makers on both side of the aisle seem to think we can't make it through our lives without their continued (mis)management of every last thing we do. Be gone, irritants!

We used to love to ride our bikes to school. What the he-l-l is going on? Where is the common sense?!

Good for mom! Fight the good fight.

That's just ridiculous, especially since mom accompanies the kid, and they wear safety gear.
I can see the school not wanting young kids to ride to school by themselves near a busy road, but if they're really that concerned with the health and safety of the kids, they should offer healthier meals and ban vending machines in the school!

I used to ride my bike to kindergarten and it was almost 2 miles away.
Did you also used to trudge miles through knee-deep snow in the dead of winter? ;) (Sorry, couldn't help it, LOL!)

Just saw this - how idiotic.

Carola - we don't agree most of the time but you said it best - damned if you do and damned if you do.

That is crazy!!

Our school district requires kids to find alternative methods for getting to school if they live within 2 miles or less of the school (ie. you can't ride the bus--they don't provide them if you live within 2 miles of the school).

I'm all for this in good weather, and my son is happily riding the 2 miles. Good for him and his fitness. However I'm not happy that I pay the same taxes as when he went to a different school in the same district and rode the bus, because when it comes to winter and heavy snow days I have no idea what we're going to do. Hopefully my husband's work will adjust his schedule so he can take him. I work nights and don't get home in time to see him off. Maybe we can join a car pool or something.

Anyway, I'm glad my son has the opportunity to ride his bike safely to school, and any parent should have the right to say how their child gets there safely.

Holy moly!! Are you kidding me?! I'd be in so much trouble then, . . .my kids school is less that 1/2 a mile away why would I drive? They love riding their bikes to school. If you ask me not enough kids ride their bikes to school. Those law makers should be passing bills to make bike friendly lanes to school and encouraging parents to get their kids on bikes to cut the obesity epidemic in our nation.

These laws are getting out of control!!! Seriously, what is going on in this world?! What's meant to protect us are being used against us...so ridiculous.

Oh my gosh of course!! Hee. Actually my sisters and I had a paper route, and we never got driven around for it. My parents felt we got paid to deliver the papers, we had to do it. There were some pretty miserable days delivering papers!

In our school district you have to take either the school bus or car to get the kids to school. No walkers or bicyclists allowed. Even the kids who live just a fence width apart from their school have to be driven by car.

Oh I actually had to be carried once because the snow too deep for me to walk. ;) Blizzard of '67 and I was in kindergarten and the school actually picked us up for the afternoon. By the time my bus dropped me back off, the snow was so deep I couldn't walk and my Dad had to walk up and get me. :D

I just continually shake my head at the stupid things bureaucrats come up with these days. Heaven forbid that any child actually gets some exercise.

When our town was building the new middle school, sidewalks were discussed, but turned down by the police chief in town, said kids should only come to school by bus or car. This guy looks like Chief Wiggam from the Simpson's. I hope we never join onto the UN resolution "Rights of a Child", I'm watching this very closely. The last thing we need is the government in our living rooms.
