an Eyebrow Situation

Hey o_O
I am just in my thirties but it seems I have been developing those unruly brow hairs as of late. The hair is also turning a tad more coarse. I was using just a basic rice bran oil balm to 'train' them overnight plus trimming with eyebrow scissors of course, but it just isn't cutting it anymore. It does keep the area from flaking, but I feel I probably need to be doing something else to stop them from turning into the eager looking mad scientist.
Where I live, salon services are quite costly (I go to the school for my hair) and I'd rather try out a couple of things at home anyway first.
Any eyebrow taming tips to share here?

Elsie - I know exactly where you're coming from! It'll be of no help, but eyebrows are the ONLY thing I go to a pro for. (I have long hair, which a friend trims every so often, I do my own leg hair removal etc.) I'm about to be 46, and, yes, I get those wiry hairs. I have my brows threaded and dyed once a month. Because I'm fair my eyebrows disappear in the summer sun! Having someone I trust to do them has made such a difference to the way I look. She explained that as we age the outer edge of the brow thins, and can age us - so having mine dyed really helps. I don't wear make-up, so I also get my eyelashes tinted at the same time. My eyebrow girl plucks my unruly hairs.....perhaps you could try that?

(Oh, and I must add that if I start getting stray facial hairs, I'll be having those sorted too!)

ETA - when my eyebrow girl finishes she combs through some hairspray - spraying onto the comb, rather than onto my brows, obviously ;)

I agree that thinner/lighter brows age us. I've noticed a thinning of my brows (I'm 59), but so far they are still dark. I just fill them in with a bit of brow powder with a brow brush when I put on my eye makeup. It's amazing how much more youthful someone with nicely formed and visible brows looks.

I trim them with scissors and just pluck strays every so often. Another thing that aging does is slow down the excess growth. I don't have nearly as much to pluck as I did when I was younger.

I've discovered that thyroid issues also affects my eyebrows. The girl that does my brows, told me that some women with thyroid issues, lose the outer one third to one half of their eyebrows. I've noticed that my outer brows are thinning, and I have to use brow powder. The older I get, the less stray brow hair I get. Like Justine stated the summer sun bleaches out my brows, darker brow powder helps. When I was younger I didn't concern myself with my brows. Just had a pro take care of them once a month. Now they have become the bane of my existence.

I used to use a brow powder, but I grew tired of having to apply it every time I applied my makeup, so I went to my aesthetician and had a permanent makeup application done. I'm extremely happy with it. I agree that the brows do thin out as we age. When I was younger, plucking the brows to make them quite thin was all the rage. Now I regret that I did all that plucking because I don't think my brows would be as thin as they are today. My hairdresser also applies tint to them when I go in for a coloring treatment. I don't know what to suggest about the unruly hairs Elsie, but you might want to see a professional for a consult at least once. Good luck!

Glad to know it isn't just me getting older man coarse hair! Oh yes, adding brow powder does take 6/7 years off my face! I find the trick is getting it the right shade.
I think I am going to heed all of your advice and see a pro for at least one consult/shaping. I've always feared pros cause I do not like the arched look at all on my own face. I think it looks just beautiful on some others, but not my own. Where I don't really wear makeup except for some mineral cheek powder, I'm afraid it would be too dramatic or just too frequent of upkeep and I am all about low maintenance upkeep. lol. I think that's the main reason I've kept my hair relatively long.
Justine, I did try tinting the lashes and I didn't like it, but the brows I have not. It's probably worth a whirl anyway!Oh & I am gonna check out that hairspray trick. : )
Does anyone else have white hairs growing around the brow area? In a way, it's convenient but it means my melanin is going now and I am growing old!!!!
Just had a pro take care of them once a month. Now they have become the bane of my existence.
Bwaahahaha!!!!

Well I'm screwed with my brows if they get thinner as we age:eek: I've always had thin hair and not very long brows. I've been coloring mine for 15 yrs since I'm fair hair/skinned. I need more hair for my eyebrows. I've always been jealous of women who have full, dark, & beautifully shaped brows. But the up side is I only shave my legs every other day and my hair grows in so light feeling. I guess when there's one plus there's always a negative.

There is a place that plucks eyebrows with doing nails but I don't know of any place that has a brow professional really around here. They have salons but the brows are an afterthought I suppose. I will have to search out a good person because mine are doing same thing. This getting older stuff, well I knew something's would happen but there are some minor details my sweet mama forgot to mention. [emoji53]

Perhaps I should have my thyroid checked - that's exactly what has happened to mine Karen. Oh no!

Justine -

Losing the "tail" of your eyebrows (the outer third) is a classic sign of hypothyroidism (not aging...it's not "normal", versus overall thinning which, after menopause is). I hope you don't have it, but if you have this symptom, you may indeed wish to be checked.
