Ok so I'm sitting here minding my own business when my kitty jumps through our open window with an injured birdie IN HIS MOUTH!! He plopped it down in the middle of the living room. It's still breathing and blinking his little eyes!! What should I do? Do I take it to the vet? Do I throw it outside (who am I kidding, I feel like I can't go near it!!). I don't want him to die but I don't want him to suffer either.

Help!!!!!
Carolyn

Been there many times with my dogs. Did you get the bird away from the cat? Is it able to move at all? I use a towel to scoop the birdie up and gently restrain them so they do not hurt themselves further. Most likely he/she has either a broken back or at the least a wing/leg. Do you have any wildlife rescue groups in your area? Animal control might know of a local group who would be willing to take the bird. I actually raised a baby Robin a while back and handed him off to a local group. You can use a dropper or syringe to give the birdie some water in the meantime. Depending on his injuries though, he may not make it long anyways and you may want to check with you local vet to see if they would be willing to put him down for you if he appears in distress/pain. Make sure that if you are in contact with him at all that you WASH your hands thoroughly. Good luck!

p.s. This was my little bird:

Thanks for that Liann and Trixie. It was super hard to get Alex (my kittie) away from that bird but I finally got him outside. Of course by then the birdie had passed.:-( :-(
I'm so upset I want to cry. It was such a cute little Robin. I tried my best but it didn't help. :-(
Oh well. I love my kitty, I just wish he wasn't a murderer.

Thanks ladies.

Oh Carolyn I know how you feel. I've rescued quite a few injured birdies over the years. There's a bird center near where I live that rehabilitates wild birds. I'm always so sad when they call me with the bad news that the little thing didn't survive. When I find birds in the yard that have already passed I'm one of those crazy people that bury them. I can't imagine just throwing them in the trash :-(

By the way, I absolutely love the pictures of your kitties and the hippo :)

Take Care!

>Will we see your kitty on the next Law & Order?

Or if you try to cover it up CSI? I don't know anything!!!

ETS: We took a baby stray cat in last year he is strictly an outside kitty but we just love him we let him in to eat and love on him we have pillow and towels and a kitty condo and toys but darn if we didn't see him with his first bird and he loves his mice I find it very hard to deal with this ecspecially with Spring we have all kinds of birds that use the same nests and raise the babies and then teach them how to fly this year is going to be difficult I do not know how to improve this situation you should see our crazy cat up in the tops of the trees with the kids and chasing after the squirrels.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your kind words. And I am relieved he isn't suffering anymore. And yes Beavs, we may be seeing Alex on Law and Order (or more accurately, a dramatic reenactment of the 'incident'.)
Chastity, I can't believe you remember my Hippo pics!! I actually turned those pictures into a calendar for my sis (pixiesis) because they were all taken in her house. That was a fun day for me! :)

Thanks ladies!! You all rock! :)

Cheer up Carolyn. This is so sad. I know, you feel maybe a little mad at your cat, but yet, you know that is her instinct to do this. I am glad birdie is out of pain though.

Clarissa

Carolyn, I am so sorry. :-( I grew up with a dog who used to catch animals so that he could play with them... and he really did think that they were playing! He was a 130# Rottweiler (strong jaws!) and he would hide in the corner of the yard and whimper whenever he killed one of his "friends". It was so sad, and we would cry together in his corner. Now looking back I call him Lenny because he really was straight out of Of Mice and Men.

I also had a cat that would bring us these wonderful gifts. Felines really don't understand humans at all do they? ;)

Missy

Gosh Missy, you're so right that they don't understand us at all! Alex won't even let me touch him now! I think he's mad that I totally freaked out and ruined his fun. There's nothing to ruin your good time like someone screaming at you right?
And that's a cute story about your dog. How sad that he whimpered about his friends! :-(

Carolyn

Well, Alex was trying to show off for you. I used have a cat named Boo Boo and she loved to to bring me dead creatures which included rabbits and squirrels. I tried to explain to her that I much prefer something from Macy's but she never quite got it ;-)

I have a dog who looks like an angel, but she kills anything that moves. Birds, squirrels, chipmunks.... it's quite heartbreaking:-(
