My mom HAD to go to a nursing home, too. There was just no way we, or any of my family, could take care of her needs. And, don't feel guilty, Michele: My mom was quite young when she went in, and when she died. Believe me, I have first-hand knowledge of what anger, holding grudges, lack of exercise, and not taking care of yourself can do to a body and spirit.

TeTe, we were fortunate in that my mom was able to live alone and care for herself until her mid-eighties. She was one feisty old broad, let me tell ya! We really struggled with the decision, but like you, we simply had no choice. She had arthritis, both rheumatoid and osteo, and her knees and feet were so deformed and weak -- she simply couldn't walk anymore. We had to drag her in there and she did not go quietly--that little stinker--but once we got her settled in she was fine.

Y'all will get a kick out of this. My mom was a real party girl. We kept a stash of booze--wine, scotch, and frangelico--in her room. We got her a small refrigerator, too, and kept it full of her favorite Italian meats and cheeses. The staff LOVED her. She always invited them for drinks (yes, they partook!) after work. She used to call my sister at work and ask her to pick up wine, Champagne, and snacks. She'd say she was having the girls in after work and she needed something to serve them.

Oh man -- I really miss that little stinker!
