What do you all do after an evening workout after work to calm down enough to be able to sleep? I am finding that even if I get home before 5pm and get in an hour workout, I'm still wired or at least wide awake by the time I should be going to bed. Reality is that I do go to bed early, around 8:30 or so, because DH gets up at 4am UGH! :(

I have had to resort to taking Ambien nightly just to get to sleep. So, how do you all come down from the workout highs to be able to sleep?

any suggestions welcome...

TIA

Dani

Unfortunately I can't offer you any advice because I also workout in the evening and sometimes don't finish until 6:30 or 7:00. I'm also kind of a night owl in that I won't go to bed until around 11:00 pm or even midnight:eek: Luckily I office out of my house and don't have to be somewhere at 8:00 am every morning but I'm still out of bed by 6:30 or 7:00 am every morning.

I've got the same problem sometimes. I have found that a cup of herbal tea with some camomille(I know that is spelled wrong!) in it helps. Also, I have taken some "Nightly Calm" which is a magnesium supplement. You put in in some hot water and it has a nice lemony-raspberry taste. I have not used the entire recommended dosage since magnesium is a natural laxative. But it does relax the brain a bit and I tend to sleep pretty well.

I used to have a glass of wine, but that sometimes wakes me back up in a couple of hours.

Otherwise, I read, watch a favorite dvd. Sometimes I've workout so hard that I just go to sleep from exhaustion!

There are nights when I am finishing w/o really late, like around 9:00 or so. Very seldom have they been later than that. I usually read before I go to bed.

longer cool down

Stretch max segment followed by a bath (sure rinse off first but then the bath.) Use epsom salts in the warm water. Lavendar bath water is nice before bed. Just twenty minutes in the water (if you have the time.)

ah, that sounds nice!

I'll have to try that. we have a deeper soaking style tub but never really thought about using it much during the week anyway  It's still in the high 90's during the day here in Vegas... so maybe even a cooler bath will help bring body temp down as well...

Also, thanks for the suggestion Rhea for the "Nightly Calm" I'll have to give that a try as well... i LOVE lemon-raspberry flavors!
