advice/info please

Hey Jes Doll,

I go to a chiro 3x's a week and so does my 19 yr. old. As a matter of fact I went 2 days before the trip and the morning of the roadtrip. I was given the ok, but was told to take it easy.

My chiro is a wonderful lady. The very first time I went, I walked in BENT OVER. I swear if you breathed on my back, the pain just shot out through the entire back. And I walked out bent. Why? First off I had to get x-rayed, step on a two sided scale to see where I was carrying most of my weight, had to balanced to see if shoulders & hips were aligned properly--shoulders are even hips are slightly off. I have scoliosis. Went home like quasi moto (sp) w/o meds. She doesn't believe in meds. (I took advil b/c I had to sleep, right?). The next day I went for results and the adjustment. I walked in again like quasi moto (sp), but walked out upright feeling 90% better. Adjustments doesn't hurt a bit. The only thing that scared me, and still does, is when she's practically on top of me, criss cross my arms in front and pushes me down to adjust the spine. But I always leave feeling good.

I too look forward going for a cracking of the back & neck which is tomorrow....aaaaahhhhh.

Oh sweetie...sorry about your neck...my neck was a bit messed up too...I love deep tissue massages....can you take some advil??? Hopefully you will feel better in the morning Jes...:)...Carole

Hang in there Jes...I'm sorry you are in such pain. Can you take some Motrin? Hopefully things will only get better from here on in...

Stay Strong!

If you're having any adjustments on Monday, I would then recommend the NSaids about an hour before the adjustments. That should really help with the pain. So don't get so nervous about the next one. Keep us posted.

Jes, take something for the pain, or at least drink some nice soothing tea. I'm sorry to hear about the deep tissue massage not feeling good to you. I personally can't stand deep tissue massage myself, if you don't like it, ask them not to do it next time. As they'll tell you it's suppose to feel uncomfortable, until you get use to it. And well, I could never get use to it. But remember it's your choice. Just like to go and get treated it was your choice as well. I never have a deep tissue massage anymore, just the straight alignment, as it gives me sever headaches afterwards, and I tried it for several months, never got use to it either. Anyone who thinks about trying that with me now, will be on their head. But then my neck is pretty messed up with the metal pin, and the bones are fused together, but I just don't do well with someone digging into my skin looking for pressure points to push.

But with c-2 out, that does cause a lot of headaches, and you may feel better tomorrow, as your neck might just be spazzing. This sometimes happens with me as well when I'm really out. Mostly because I haven't went and seen my chiropractor like I should. BTW if you don't feel comfortable with any of this, make them stop. You can take your x-rays and get a second opinion as well. And I tell that to everyone, no matter what type of doctor, get a second opinion if your not comfortable. As you may like one school better then another, and the only way your going to know is to ask questions and ask different people, and try a little bit here and there. As once you describe your likes, most can tell you, if their school will fit into what you like or it won't. I like gentle press adjustments, with hands and an activator. Where as my mother likes the quick crack/pop adjustment, a bit of a harsher move done to really make you pop. So we see different chiropractors but are in the same building. And let them know how you feel, and do ask and see if they can do other methods, as everyone is different. Now two people can be re-aligned the same way, and have the same results. And the only way to get fixed without a lot of pain, is to tell them what you felt and what you didn't like and stress things when you don't want to do the same thing again. Just remember you are paying for this, and you need to be comfortable and not hurting when you go home.

Tomorrow you will probably feel better but tired, and your neck may even feel tired. That is normal, if your neck muscles are spazing. As they are using up a whole lot of energy to try and move that bone back out of alignment. As they are use to being all curled up with the bad alignment. And now all stretched out is the weaker state, as it's been so long since they were in proper alignment, they don't like it. They want to be in that tight knot that gave you a headache in the first place, to only now give you this horrible throbbing headache, because they don't want to behave and stretch out like good muscles. This will pass and probably won't happen unless you wait for quite awhile to get re-adjusted. Since your next appt. is Monday I don't think you'll have anything to worry about.

If you are reading this to night, go take something and lie down, and rest and sleep and take the weight off your back and neck, this will help with the adjustment as well as allowing the muscles to get use to their new/old home. But most of all just let them relax, try a nice warm bath, or a heating pad, or if you’re like me, try ice. I tense with heat, so heating pads and me don't get along.

Good luck and I'm sure things will be better for you tomorrow.

I spent all evening the past TWO nights in the bed with heat. i was in so much pain last night that i finally ended up taking some pain pillsx( they never worked though. I also took endless advil and a muscle relaxer earlier yesterday b/c the pain was much worse after the massage and adjustment.

Today, so far i feel a little better and my head is not currently hurting. i don't think i will be getting any more deep tissue massages b/c that was excrutiating! my toes were curled the entire time.

Since my neck and shoulder hurt no matter what i do, do you ladies thik it would be a bad idea to mow(on the riding mower) today??? it has to get done while it isn't raining and i figure i will hurt either way. the doctor did not restrict any activities...so what do you think?

Jes,

As a chronic pain suffer, do whatever you want. I usually try to hold onto the light pain day as much as I can and not aggravate it, but I know when things need to be done, to just do it. The mower and vacuum are my worse enemy, the minute I turn it on and touch it; my light pain is immediately switched to a lot of pain. If you can avoid mowing, enjoy the day of no headache. If you can't you may aggravate things, and cause yourself to be right back in bed. But you’re the one who’s going to have to decide how important it is, and what you body can really take right now. As well as if you feel good enough to do it. I can’t stand vibration, so both the lawn mower and the vacuum, ruin the rest of my day. So I usually try to do them when I know I can lay down with out feel guilty for not doing 100 other things.

I wasn't going to get involved in this discussion, but if you have something similar to what I have, a chiro will most likely make it worse. I have a pinched nerve a slightly bulging disk in my cervical spine. I am going to a neurosuregeon next week for a cortisone injection. My brother started out with what I had 3 years ago and let it go until he needed surgery(and ended up with a spinal fusion) but everyone told him to go to a chiro the chiro did more damage to him. Nothing against them, I guess they are great for some, but when it comes to the spine I would have an MRI and see a nuerosurgeon. A chiro may make your condition worse. By the way, I found out that an XRay tells you squat, get an MRI and see good doctor. If yours is spinal, I wouldn't mess with it. Just my 2 cents.

i have my next adjustment apt today. i have not had any pain since Friday evening. i called and he said i should still come in and get adjusted b/c even though the pain is gone, i am not healed yet. For thoseof you who have gotten adjustments, how do you know if you need to keep getting them or not?

I'm a little familar with chiros and would caution anyone from going to someone who will say that you need to be adjusted for the long term. Back adjustment can be relieving with acute pain but may cause long term damage if done on a regular basis. And I don't believe there is scientific evidence done by peer reviewed studies (MD's, NOT chiros) that will support getting adjusted for the long term as beneficial. Adjustment may cause immediate relief because it may result in the prodution of endorphins which can override any pain signals to the brain. I'm not a doctor, but have read a lot about the subject of chiros. I would suggest doing research on the subject before going to a chiro. There are many websites that may be interesting. One "watchdog" site is http://www.quackwatch.org/ which I have found useful.

I have the same exact thing with the "c" curve in the neck not being there but my messed up neck disc is number 5. I stopped the deep tissue thing after a month cuz I was in pain too. Now I get some sort of electrode therapy along with an adjustment and I do some exercise machines to strenghthen my neck muscles and I truly do feel better then when I started in Feb, although it did take at least 3 months to feel it. I def agree with the past posters that have said get an mri cuz that seriously is the only thing that will pinpoint EVERYTHING that is really wrong. At the practice I go to they do a reevaluation every month on me and change my treatment appropriately ie - decrease visits, increase weight etc..

Jes,

The only way you know, is to stop the adjustments for a while, if you feel good and there is no pain, they what more can they really do? I believe in chrios, as if it wasn't for them, I would be dead right now. But I don't believe in you must come in three times a week, to be healed. A lot of chiros do, do to the medical school practice they have to go through, and it has more with teaching the muscles to keep the bones in the right place, and nero-function then anything else. Also there as has been too many studies that has shown it's very bad for the spine, and the muscles to be adjusted more then twice a week. Even as messed up as my back is, I get adjusted when I feel out, I don't have a schedule, sometimes I'm in there twice in one week, other times he doesn't see me for three months. When I feel out I have bad headaches, and I've gotten so in-tuned to my body I now can tell the chrio ever bone that is out, before he even touches my back. That's how I know when I need to see him, the main thing that will drive me in, is my neck. Yes it's fused and has a metal pin, but it still pops out every now and then when I get stressed.

Though if you still keep having problems do get an MRI, they are good, but they aren't all seeing, they can miss things just like a normal x-ray. And can be pretty expensive, even with insurance, so do check with your insurance before even mentioning it to your doctor. But if there is a herniated disc then it's a good idea to get one. Those do show up on x-rays if they are done right and you have a really good x-ray reader (person). But a lot of times they are missed because another problem in the neck somewhat hides it.

I've had so many x-rays and MRIs done I now can read my own films, I've had readers who flip out about every odd speck and I've had readers by-pass some major stuff. So always get a second and a third opinion. Not matter how much a waste of time you think it is. It's better to have three people agree, or two disagree so you can ask questions. As I’ve personally seen them be wrong with me, over and over again. This includes chrios or any other doctor.
