Advice! I need to get back into shape!

Hello,
I need some advice! I used to consider myself fit. However, for some reason the las few weeks I have not found the will to exercise. I have gained a little weight and most importantly I feel like I'm loosing muscle and endurance. Would anybody care to share with me their advice on how to start over.
Should I focus on cardio first, with little muscle work? should I just get back into my old (hard) routine right away?
I would love to hear from anybody,
thanks

when i have gone through this (i'm actually going through this currently) i just focus on doing things i want to do and not what i feel i need to do. So i haven't had ANY will to do weight training in the past 2 1/2 weeks other than mabe 2 circuit workouts so i haven't. I've been enjoying cardio. As long as your diet is good you will be fine. I would just listen to your body and if all you want to do is go for long walks then do that.

I've been having this problem too, so I've been focusing on what is causing it. I discovered that I was ignoring a seasonal allergy problem, so now I'm trying to deal with it. I think the first order of business is to deal with the source of the problem. Is your problem physical or emotional? What is causing it? After that, I totally agree with Kariev.

ITA. When I feel this way (or when I help my clients through this), it's all about "doing what you'll do to get it done." If that means going for a walk or jumping on a trampoline, it doesn't matter. So, what's the best exercise you can do? The one you'll do!:D

Ugh - I'm right in the middle of this slump myself! I'm frustrated and feel I can't get on the 'up' side of fitness. I feel soft and weak - ick! I think I'm too impatient and want results faster than they come, after a few weeks I get discouraged and give up. =[ But I keep starting again, so I suppose all is not lost!

you are in an exercise rut! go out and do something totally different. try a new sport. sign up for a new exercise class (my coworker is fanatic over zumba classes http://www.zumba.com/us/) go hike somewhere new or train for a race/walkathon. do something that is challenging for your body and stimulating for your mind.

You've already been given some great advice to start with.
Here's another one that may help.. Sadly there is not one canned answer that will work for everyone, so you need to find what works for you.

Speaking as someone who just came out of a slump that lasted WAY too long: what did it for me was starting the STS rotation. I think it worked for me because my calender was full of workouts and everything was laid out ahead of time. It was the structure of STS system and the goal of completing the STS rotation that motivated me beyond the cycle of a few weeks on again and off again that I was stuck in.

Again that may not work for you but you can try it. It doesn't have to be STS, but try planning a month of workouts. There are plenty of rotations to download and pick from. I would suggest you start with the type of workouts you tend to prefer.

Good luck and remember there are many people here to lean on as you push through your slump. :D

Laura! You're back! So nice to hear from you!

And I agree with your post. I would add that sometimes if you just force yourself to do something that you used to love to do, you discover again how much you love it and it gets you back on the fitness wagon.

I agree. STS was the first rotation I have actually stuck to, more or less. but you know what really gets me fired up? Actually creating the rotation! I create new rotations just for fun. I really love doing it for some reason, and it gets me excited about the workouts.

Luli- I would start with simple walking, either outside or Leslie's DVDs, 30-45 min a day and then slowly add some weights. Or just do whatever makes you happpy and start from there. We all go thru these periods so hang in there!

i agree with a just start doing something method and slowly start adding or changing things as you go. its more important to get back into the habit of fitting a workout then it is on what kind of workout. once you formed that habit of making the time and getting into the routine of it then change your workouts to what you want to focus on and of course if eating habits are an issue as well then start slowly making those changes. personally i have found that trying to jump into something right away without the small changes, just sudden changes, i get discouraged and give up.

I think that all of us understand that!

Do you get netflix? You might try a different dvd from them every week. Shifting your focus from results driven workouts to ones that just keep the body moving and your mind engaged. Do you have any workouts that are still in their shrink wrap? What I have done in the past that worked for me when I was in a slump, coming back from a broken set of toes, is I set up a long rotation with just three short walks per week and two dvds per week. I started with the easiest workouts that I had and worked up from there.

I don't think that just diving into hard workouts is really going to work.

Also, if you aren't feeling well, maybe you need a multivitamin or you are fighting an allergy. Either of those two things can make you feel tired both in the body and in the mind. You might get a check up with your doctor.
