Would anyone be interested in this? It may keep us on our toes and motivated.....or maybe just me? Just to share what we ate and how our workouts went.
Lori:)

Hi Lori!

Looking GOOD GIRL!!!! I'd be happy to do an Abs diet/workout checkin with you. Today, I'm doing Bootcamp and I'm planning on have 1/2 cup plain oatmeal for breakfast, yogurt with some almonds for lunch, and 4 oz of chicken breast and some spinach for dinner. I also take Calcium and mulitvitamins too. I always ate the food that's core to the Abs diet. I'm just trying my best to JUST stick to those foods!!

Have a wonderful day...You're beautiful Girl!!!:)

Hi Mari,

It's called the Abs Diet Eat Right Every Time Guide by David Zinczenko. He is the Editor-inChief of Men's Health. The book/guide is very easy to read and easy to follow. I bought mine at BJ's Wholesale, but I'm sure you can find it in any bookstore. But just to give you a little synopsis, it's based on eating the following foods:

A- Almonds and other nuts
B- Beans and legumes
S- Spinach and other green vegetables
D- Dairy (fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt, cheese
I- Instant oatmeal (unsweetened, unflavored)
E- Eggs
T- Turkey and other lean meats
P -Peanut Butter
O- Olive Oil
W- Whole grain breads and cereals
E- Extra protein (whey) powder
R- Rasberries and other berries

It spells out Abs Diet Power. It emphasizes eating six small meals a day to keep your metabolism going. Of course, there is a lot of information in the book which gets into specifics, but I hope this is a start for you!!:)

Lisa,
A check in would be great b/c I still have alot of questions!:) What size are your servings? I had 1/3 (uncooked oatmeal which is 1 cup cooked) and 1 apple. Snack- yogurt and cranberries.Lunch is gonna be eggs with a ww wrap. I am unsure about eating 2 egg yolks. Should I just eat the whites or one yolk and 2 whites? Do you stick to the serving size as it is on a package? Size of a deck of cards for meat and bread is the size of your hand? On a loaf of bread a serving is considered 2 slices. How much weight have you lost and how long have you been on the diet? I think it is something you could really stick to though.
Thanks,
Lori:)
p.s thanks for the compliments. I always have people hitting on me or saying I am beautiful but I am modest.I don't see it.I know I am not ugly but I don't think I am a jaw dropper either. I had one guy ask me this weekend if I every thought about getting into modeling b/c he had some connections. I felt so embrassed. There is no way i would sign myself up for something like that. It was one of DH's friends that we haven't seen in a while and I had my hair straigtened.First when he met up with us he was starring at me but I thought is was b/c he was trying to figure out what was different...little did I know he was in awe of my beauty hahahahahaha!!!! Anyways I don't see it.....you should see me in the mornings:eek:

I might not be able to do it faithfully, but would love to participate.

Today:

breakfast: sandwich - whole wheat english muffin with avocado and corned beef (inspired by some recipes in the abs diet guide); 2 glasses of water

snack: almonds and a figure 8 protein shake made with OJ, strawberries, and banana

lunch: loaded-with-good-stuff salad with light dressing (no HFCS - abs diet no-no) and small piece of leftover sirloin steak from yesterday's cookout; glass of water

afternoon snack: almonds and probably some homemade black bean and pork chili (made with the loin of the pork); water

dinner: Not sure, yet. Probably black bean and pork chili with a salad, possibly a half a roast beef sandwich on wheat with avocado or spinach (or both). I might just make a wrap with ww tortillas. The abs diet guide has so many ideas for wraps, and I've got lots of the stuff in my fridge for them; 2-3 glasses of water.

Where I could have improved today: I ate 6 small "butter" crackers with my salad at lunch, in addition to some that were whole grain. Also, while my salad dressing didn't have any HFCS in it, it did contain vegetable oil as a primary ingredient.

Hey, I think it would be neat for people to post some of their own recipes on here that go along with the abs diet, but that aren't in the book. For instance, my black bean and pork chili is excellent and goes along with the diet as long as you select a lean cut of pork (tenderloin). It's also amazingly simple, being that it's a crock pot recipe.

I don't have it here with me at work, but the recipe contains a whole yellow or red bell pepper (chopped), thinly sliced red onion, garlic, 2 cans of drained black beans, a pound of cubed pork (you can do less or more to your tastes or even substitute chicken or lean steak), a whole seeded and chopped tomato, and various spices. There's very little salt in the recipe. I'll try to remember to post the recipe tonight when I get home.

I've also found a great turkey chili that is made with ground turkey breast and kidney beans in the crock pot, as well. It was much better than I thought it would be.

I am off to the bookstore to check this out after work tonight, have heard many things about it and is recommended. Not sure if I'll buy it yet, gotta take a peek inside. But I would love to follow this progress with you and see how it works for you all.
Of course cruising his website last night got me all crazy, anytime you read someone has lost 15 lbs in a month you want to try it. I have about 7 lbs to lose. I'm not too upset about it but my biggest problem is my clothes don't fit! I had an illness over the winter that kept me out of commission for about 3 1/2 months so I am trying to get back to normal....its been tough. I think its worse sometimes when you only have a few lbs to lose because its easy to put off. Once you find the evil ways of fattening food and a soft couch its hard to come back. Hopefully your progress will inspire me to keep it up.

Hi, Lorihart!

I am by no means an expert on the abs diet, but I have studied fitness and nutrition quite extensively through the years, and both are big "hobbies" of mine (they're actually just short of being "passions", but I'll just call them hobbies). With that said, I'll try to give you my 2 cents in answer to your questions above.

What size are your servings? If a recipe calls for a sandwich, I eat one sandwich. If I am still hungry after eating that one sandwich, I'll eat a snack or a side to go with it. Usually, though, that one sandwich is enough. Sometimes, we have to train our stomach that it needs less food. It's gotten used to eating so much that it now has to "shrink" back to its normal size and realize, "Ah-ha! THIS is how much I'm SUPPOSED to be eating." it took me about a week or so to train my stomach that it didn't need as much as I had been feeding it.

Serving size - size of a deck of cards: I've heard that a serving of meat, for instance, is the size of a deck of cards, or the size of the palm of your hand (doesn't include your fingers), or the size of your fist. I think any of these methods is good to give you an estimate of how much you should be eating. I think two pieces of bread is a good serving size (especially if you're eating a sandwich :) ). Regarding eggs: I think that yolks are okay according to the abs diet. The yolks contain all kinds of nutrients that are good for the body.

I think the best measure, though, is this: Ask yourself, "Am I hungry?" If you are, eat. If you aren't, don't. Remember that it takes a while for your brain to get the signal that it's full when you're eating, which is why so many people overeat. Make it a point to stop eating before you think you're really full, and then 20 minutes later you'll realize that you didn't need that extra half sandwich you were thinking about eating after all. You'll find that you're full and that eating that extra sandwich would have been too much food. Before long, you'll learn your own limits and will know how much to eat and be full.

How much weight have you lost and how long have you been on the diet? I've lost 2 pounds in two weeks. That doesn't sound impressive - I know......but, being that I had plateaued for 6+ months and couldn't lose ANY weight AT ALL, 2 pounds is a big deal for me. What's more, I cheated a little during my first couple of weeks on this diet (I'm trying to cut out so much cheating this week), so I'm impressed I lost the 2 pounds. Additionally, I'm going through my monthly bloat and usually gain about 3-5 pounds in one week...so to actually be 2 pounds below my normal mark is really good! I can't wait to see how much I drop after my bloat is over.

Hi catwomen,
Thanks for the info. I know it is hard to stick to something but as long as we stick to the guidelines we should be fine.I think I did o.k today. I had a little pick at a cookie but thats it....and beleive me thats good for me. I am into mindless eating. I use to weigh less and my eating was in check. Then I got into the habit of picking at food (anytime) before I went to bed, after meals, while I was cooking dinner and I thought whats the harm I haven't gained any weight....and BAM! There is was...10 lbs later.
I can't just make up a diet or say I am cutting back. I have to follow some guidelines.
I am hungry today. I have often wondered if it is true about the stomach theroy.I thought it was just a myth but I can remember hearing it growing up. I also beleive that it does take atleast a week to adjust and eventually we will be eating a certain amount of food, losing weight and not hungry either.
My only issue is that I work night shifts. On the days when I am working I sleep until 2 ish, so I probably won't eat as much as I should.Hopefully that won't back fire.

Thanks again,
Lori

Hello Lori!!

Humility is a good thing...but you're beautiful so just accept it..it's okay!! haha I've been doing the Abs Diet for about three months now. I don't have a lot of weight to lose but I'm constantly trying to get the body fat off, get defined, work on a six pack..etc...Sound familiar?? I've lost five lbs so far and three body fat points..so that's pretty good for me. I feel like it's really helping me lean out and eat well too!! My energy levels have been better. As far as portion sizes go, according to the book, they say don't worry about that, but frankly I have to. I usually eat a cup of cooked oatmeal and like you said a deck of cards size protein for dinner. I also eat a cup of yogurt and I do go lit on the almonds...small handful. I eat more veggies, probably like 1 1/2 cups with dinner. I usually have a large salad for lunch with some chicken. Something that I've added that I love is I make a protein shake with 1 cup Lactaid with 2/3 cup of frozen unsweetened strawberries or blueberries and 2 tlbs. protein powder and five ice cubes. Lori, it's wonderful and it fills you!!! I've noticed a big difference in my body fat since doing that. I usually have that instead of lunch or breakfast. I don't eat as many times as it says in the book. It doesn't work for me. It's just too much. I'm telling you after you read the entire book, you'll see it's not a fad diet. It really is a healthy way to eat and you'll find portion wise what works best for you.:)

Was wondering about this book compared to BFL. I don't have either but was wonering are they similar? These are the 2 I've been hearing about the most with the highest rate of success.

I have both. I think the Abs diet(only have the book 3/4 read) you may eat a little more carbs. With the BFL diet you have to incoporate carbs and protein with every meal. With the abs diet I had oatmeal and an apple fro breakfast, so you can see there that there wasn't much protein.
I really liked BFL as well but I couldn't stick with it b/c you get a cheat day. After that day is over it is hard to get back on track.
With both you eat 6 meals, averaged about 2-3 hours a part.
I don't know what the BFL womens book is about. I had it in my hands but didn't buy it b/c I didn't know if it was much different from the orignal BFL book.
In my eyes both are great books.
The reasons I am trying a new plan is b/c;
1.You get a cheat meal once a week not a whole day of stuffing your face.
2.Its only 6 weeks instead of 12. Probably just a mind game b/c I am hoping I can continue on with the program after the 6 weeks.
Hope I helped,
Lori:)

Thanks Lori, thats exactly what I wanted to know. I only need the 6 weeks tops too. Just to take off a few then I am fine, just in that groove where I can't seem to think for myself. I want to be pretty strict but since you get a cheat meal do you think I could use that for a couple glasses of red wine on a fri night?
thanks for your help :D

Is the author sure that it doesn't go like this:

A-Apple torte
B-Butter
S-Salty snacks
D-Dounuts
I-Ice Cream
E-English Toffee
T-Toaster Strudels
P-Pie
O-Oeros
W-Whiskey
E-Eggos
R-Reece Peanute Butter Cups
Just for fun!!! Wishful thinking

In the book he says eat whatever you want for that meal, forget everything we read, eat 1/2 a pizza, buffalo wings, or use your cheat meal for a Sat night out but hop back in for the next meal and get ready to start another week.
Chances are I will use my cheat meal for a night out as well although I don't go out that much anymore.
I think we probably have the same amount of weight to lose. I am 5'4" and weigh 130 lbs. The lowest I have ever been was 118 and that was in Grade 11. In my adult life my lowest weight as been around 120-123 lbs. Thats where I would like to get to. I also have to tone up my legs and arms some more. I use to have such well defined arms but now they are covered up with fat.ICKKKKKK!
Lori:)

Hey, I am 5'4" too :)
Great, this way I won't feel bad about a couple glasses of wine.
Thanks Lori for all the info, I'll check out the book tonight. Looking forward to hearing everyones progress!!!

chocolate. The abs diet does allow chocolate as a snack. You have to pay attention to the "fillers", such as HFCS and vegetable oil, but it's nice to know that chocolate is there as a treat for those who want to snack on it. Some chocolate and some almonds! Sounds like a great snack to me.
