ab definition

Dear Cathe,

First off, I would like to say that I love your workouts. They help me start my morning off in the right direction. Thanks for everything. My question is, while I work my abs at least 3 times a week, I never truly feel a tenderness in my muscles to indicate that they have been worked. My stomach is pretty flat and I can see some definition in my obliques, but I would love to hear what you think I should do in order to get the muscles really working.

Thanks, Soccermom

Soccermom,

Obviously not Cathe, but I had similar problems in the past. Have you tried Cathe's Core Max? If you have, do you increase the weight in her 3rd rotation? You may need to challenge yourself more by changing up your ab program, as well as utilize different methods on getting the perfect abs. Try using a stability ball, weighted ball, and plank work (if you haven't already). Also, I read where Cathe said to stand in front of a mirror in second position (squatted w/ feet apart like in a plie squat) and punch side to side (aim for 10 and 2 of a clock). Repeat this motion for 5 minutes. I have added this at the end of my ab program once a week.

I am sure there are many other ways to accomplish a more strenuous program for your abs. The one key I might point out is that make sure you are eating healthy. Also, don't place allow your hands to yank at your neck and make sure you are doing your ab work properly.

Good luck as well all are in search of the definition we work for!

Hi
I know I'm not Cathe, but I read your question on how to get more definintion in your abs, however first of all, I just want to tell you I'm only 14 years old, but I know a lot. I'm a level 6 Gymnast, and work out at a gym 6 days a week. Anyway, I have definition in my abs (six pack) because of all my workoing out, but not many girls and women want this, but to get nice flat defined abs (like you have, but want to increase) try doing higher reps of the ab exercises you already do. And/Or if you use an ab machine (like at the Gym) try increasing the weight to make your abs work alittle harder. Trust me, my favorite body part to work is my abs, and if you follow this, you'll see great results!!

Good Luck :)

I would only go to the comfort of your fitness zone. Some people see great results with limited weights, but most of us need some weight. As far as the medicine ball goes, I use 8 pounds. On the ab machines at the gym, I use about 30 pounds. I really have seen great results from using the BOSU, stability ball, and medicine ball. I think the ab machine at the gym can cause some discomfort in your lower back if that area is not strong enough and if you aren't using it properly. Anyway, I wish you luck with your ab workouts and I am sorry I don't have the perfect solution, but as we age our bodies require different methods and many times a change in training patterns. I used to be a dancer for many years, but as I have gotten older I do notice differences in how training my body requires more than training (eating helps too).

I am sure Cathe will have some good advice for this post. I can't wait to see her response:)

I forgot to ask if you do any pilates or kickboxing workouts? Both of these are great for abs. Just a few more thoughts:)
