A technical question for non-geeks...

I have had a problem with comcast high speed internet since last Thursday- now a week! I had to sign up with a dial-up ISP just to get online lately. I've never had a problem with Comcast until now, but they are in no hurry to fix it, even though the whole street is out!
Do you think DSL companies give you the same type of customer service? It's like comcast has me where they want me & I can't do a thing about it. It is terribly frustrating!

Any prior experiences or tips? I'm just mad. I pay for service that I'm not getting and at least they can do is give a suitable explanation. I know networks go down, etc. but their inactiveness is insulting!

You shouldn't pay for service you're not getting! When my cable internet was out for a week, I made them refund my a portion of my monthly fee (I calculated a pro-rated amount for the number of days between when I called them and when it was finally working). If your whole street is out, they ought to be getting into gear to fix it!! You might want to see if you can lodge a complaint with the Better Business Bureau or something. Good Luck!

Oh I don't intend to pay for service I'm not getting. I just want to get the service I gladly pay for.:-( x( :(

Hi Marla....I have a SIL in Sac CA that uses Comcast and they have had nothing but problems and like you said are not in any hurry to fix it. We were there one weekend when they were supposed to come out....OMG...you have to tell the same story over and over as they keep sending different guys and nothing gets done. IMO..I would switch in a heartbeat. Now for me...slow dial up..http://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/h0/hollering.gif[/img] ...Carole

I have DSL and I like it, cable is available and would be faster. DSL is plenty fast for me.

My DSL comes in on the same phone line that I talk over. In 15yrs of living at this address I have never had loss of phone service, in 4 years I have never had loss of DSL.

I have been without cable a time or two and frankly my TV bill is $50 per month with no premiums, Adelphia is making enough of of me.

If every subscriber of phone servuce on a street was without service, Verizon would be working on it, if it was a week the utilities commission would be breathing down their backs.

Hey Marla (yes...it's me...I know I've been missing in action lately),

I have Comcast too and haven't had a problem except that sometimes the modem gets hosed and I have to reboot it. I don't have DSL -- but can tell you that customer service sucks for most, if not all, telecommunications companies. I work for a company that sells equipment and software for DSL services so we deal with companies like verizon, BS, etc and I have some idea of the outtages that can happen (since we get a panicked phone call when something isn't working with our software/hardware). In general, I can tell you that there are lots of things that can go wrong and outtages are pretty common :-( Hopefully...most of those outtages occur in the middle of the night when not too many people care.

In general DSL is better simply because you are guaranteed a certain rate/speed. With cable, it all depends upon how many people in your neighborhood are using the same "pipe" -- so the performance can be unpredictable. Also...not everyone can get DSL. You have to be within a certain distance of the nearest central office.

My answer is yes...you will probably get the same quality of customer service from a DSL company that you're getting from Comcast. I'd go with whomever is cheapest.

Shonie

Ooops...you said "non-geeks". My bad.

Okay, Shonie and Davie! I knew you would come through & answer some questions. The thing is, I have been without High-Speed since April 27th, so all I have at home is Dial-up! AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, if I'm at work I may not be able to keep up with the rotations on this Open Discussion board (you can't count on being notified to a response. Not to mention, if I'm at home I most probably couldn't keep up either.) So belatedly, thanks so much for your response. These were the exact people I was counting ON!!!Yeah!!!!

After all that, I'm still without service. Story too long!!! Hopefully BETTER customer service this weekend 5/21/05. If not, I'm still at their mercy because, Shoney, In the area I'm in, DSL, has not been offerred in the eight years I've lived here!!! My house backs up to some woods. Maybe they think I'm not worth the business.

Anyway, both of you, thanks for your input. I figured you guys would chip in, it just took me this long to find out. Heck!!!!!! My internet access is very, very lame.

Marla

P.S. Wish me luck for Saturday

ICK...Dial Up! How can you stand it? :)

The reason you probably aren't being offered DSL is because you aren't close enough to a central office -- not because you're not worth the business. Is your house a newer one? If so, there may be some other "high-speed" service available for you. It is becoming more common for new developments to lay fiber when building (which is different from DSL). What subdivision are you in? When was your house built? I can try to lookup "high-speed" data service online for you to see if there is anything besides comcast in your area. Unfortunately, it seems the companies aren't very good at advertising it sometimes.

Good luck on Saturday!

See ya,
Shonie

Oh my home is an older home in east plano. I've searched for DSL or high speed service around here online using my zip code & that's how I found comcast.

I've been with comcast since before it was comcast (when it was @home). We've never had a problem with customer service. In fact, we just had a problem last week, called, they couldn't "connect" to us so scheduled someone to come out even though they couldn't tell if it was our modem or their service. Turns out it was our modem & we are back up & running.
