A rest week - my review

SRP

Cathlete
First, I have to admit that it hasn't been a full week - today is day six, and I plan to work out. I can't take it anymore.

Okay, there have been a few benefits. My calf feels like it's finally healed, and my knees got a much-needed break from too much elliptical work. After four weeks of calf trouble, it's about time that thing finally healed, and I am glad the rest helped there.

On the other hand, issues with my forearm/bicep tendons seem to have worsened. The only thing I can figure is that they're not getting enough movement to keep them limber.

The worst thing, though is overall muscle stiffness, mostly in my back and hips. I count on my workouts to loosen me up after a day sitting in the office, and since I haven't been working out, the stiffness has accumulated until it's downright uncomfortable.

I have been stretching for about a half hour every evening, but I guess it's not enough. In fact, last night when I was stretching my hip flexors, they actually hurt!

I agree 100% with the need for rest in a workout schedule. And I still think that a rest week has the potential for quite a few benefits. But let me tell you, the next time I decide to take one, it will NOT be during a work week. Maybe during a vacation when I have lots of physical activity planned.

Just a thought...

My rest weeks (that arent vacations) are 5 days of yoga, 60min stretching, and /or walking...What I learned from P90X & Recovery Weeks that its a recovery from your normal workout - so if a person does heavy duty cardio regularly it would be no intense cardio- P90X is prmarily lifting so its a recovery week in that you lift no weights but still w/o 6 days... Thats my understanding... If I took a full week off without doing anything (except eating!) I'd not have the great results I get from them. (I always eat poorer when I dont workout)
Just some things to consider.

Catherine - my fingers are crossed that you'll get lots more vacations, whether you take rest weeks or not!

Traci - my rest week... or five days, actually... did include stretching and walking. But it apparently it takes a lot more intensity for my body to work out all the kinks.

I'm not sure if I'll try a full rest week again any time soon - unless something else falls apart on me... ;) What I may try is to go lighter - lighter weights, less intense or shorter cardio, that sort of thing.

Hi Shannon!

I travel quite a bit and don't even think about workouts during that time. I still take stairs and walk a lot, but I don't do any formal workout regimen.

OK, I do take my resistance bands and do some of Cathe's moves every evening.

I usually have a rest period of 7 to 10 days.

By the time I am back home I am so ready to workout again!

And my workouts are better. I had tennis elbow and plantar fasciatis, but by taking an extended break from working out, both problems resolved themselves.

So I really advocate rest, but I remember what Cathe says: "Take a Break but not a Vacation".
