A little "ballsy" for a 22 year old intern!

Cathlete
Our department just hired a 22 year old part-time intern and yesterday was her first day. It was also my day off, so I wasn't at work. The IT department has not received the intern's new computer yet, so our director set the intern up in my office. OFFICE - not a cubicle. Now, not to sound as though I have any sort of power trip going, but when you see an office of cubicles with actual door-supplied offices on the perimeter, don't you think that those people inside the offices are a bit more powerful than those in the cubicles? (I'm not saying that I actually think of myself as more powerful, because I'm not and I have no delusions that I'm better than anyone in the cubicles. Well, maybe one of them...) Anyway, if I was a 22 year old who didn't know anyone, I would DEFINITELY have a little respect.

I came in this morning and immediately noticed that my office had been used. The shade on my window was drawn all the way down. That's a little pet peeve I have - if you use my office, leave stuff ALONE! Then I turned my radio on and after a few minutes, I realized it was playing the completely wrong genre for my station. That little miss-all-that changed my radio station!!!!! If I was using someone else's office, especially someone whom I've never met, I wouldn't even turn the radio on, much less change the station!

The only saving grace to this is that I have one of those auras about me that is unintentionally intimidating to people who don't know me. I don't know what it is, because I'm friendly and am actually very laid back. So, I know that she'll be scared of me when she meets me. But unless she's super cool, I'm not going to make any effort to make her feel less intimidated. Change my radio station...grrrrrr!!!!

RE: A little

I agree with you 100%! There was a time when people didn't have "homes" here (part timers and such) and it always annoyed me when someone used my office and I cam back to a mess. Literally, there was a time when someone used my office for a few hours and not only CHANGED my computer settings but saved documents to my DESKTOP! Oh boy, was I ANGRY! x(

RE: A little

OH DO I HAVE 1 FOR YOU! I can totally relate! But get this...my husband is part owner in the business where we work, and when we hired a temp while I was on maternity leave, she got her own office! To make matters worse, it's been 3 years, and she's still here! It's a long story....she does get some work done, but I would give anything to get rid of her! Since my husband is too nice to say anything, she gets all the easy jobs-anything that is sensitive or complicated gets piled onto me. Which in it's own way I know is a compliment, that the bosses know that she is fluff, but once in a while, it sure would be nice to have some of the gravy! And the fact that she is in her own office bothers me big time! They put her in there because there was really no where else to stick her, but now, when a salesperson or other business associate comes into the office, they think she's above me since she's in an office and I'm not...and she LETs them all think it! I can go on, but I woke up this morning mad about her, and when I saw your post, I thought, "I'm not the only one?!?"

RE: A little

Oh that's really bad. I'd be seriously pi$$ed. In fact, I'd ask her for the key to her apartment just so you could mess w/her personal things.

Hey, speaking of offices, here's a question: when did a closed office door come to mean "I'm not busy, walk right in?"

Or when did a closed door of any kind mean "knock and walk right in without waiting for me to tell you to come in?"

RE: A little

Oh yeah, people do that to me all the time. The freakin janitor does it! I get disturbed less when my door is open than when it's closed. Maybe it's b/c everyone can see the mean look on my face when the door's open. x(

Hi Donna,

I'd be more pissed off at the director who let her use your office, than the intern herself. She may have been told to "make herself at home".

Something I'd recommend to people who can do it, is to put a some sort of password on your computer that comes up at startup or on the screen saver. Something that locks your workstation when your not around.

RE: A little

Donna this is OT but your picture is great! cute kitty too.
BTW I'm almost your neighbor in western/upstate NY.

I hope the intern is remorseful. Most likely she is just ignorant. I'm sure she will have learned from this experience if she has half a brain.

RE: A little

Well, I'm really not ticked about her being allowed to use my office because I don't pay rent or anything. Plus, she wouldn't have been able to do any work at all if she didn't have a computer. I tell the woman who works for me to use my office whenever she wants and I'm not here because the woman she sits with is a constant blabber and drives us both insane. At least if you're in my office you can tune her out or close the door. But I'm positive that my boss did not tell her to "make herself at home". Kate probably just figured that the girl would have enough sense to know her boundaries.

I'm going to practice my intimidating look tonight when I get home so I'll be all ready for her tomorrow when I meet her. I practice it when I have to do an employee relations investigation and I'm meeting with the person who has been bad. I usually wear a "power" suit, too. But tomorrow is casual day. So I'll just have to intimidate her with how awesome I look in my blue jeans.:)

RE: A little

Thanks and Thanks. Purrple is my favorite of our critters. She's SO sweet! And soft and mellow. She's not too chatty like our fat kitty, and not too needy like our youngest kitty. And the dog...well, he's just too high maintenance now that I'm a mom.

Where in WNY do you live? Hopefully not Erie County. It sucks living here now with our stupid budget crisis. They closed down the park near my house so I couldn't even take my daughter sledding yesterday. New York blows.
