A-Jock Question

Cathlete
I tried to email you but could not get it through.

I have a question. You have probably covered it before but please help me.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO EAT????? I am a diet pro yet I still have some weight
to lose (5-10lbs) Is it 40-30-30? South Beach? Weight Watchers?

About how many calories should I, a 5"1' 128lb 34 year old female eat with
working out?

Too, I plan on taking your advise to another user regarding cardio then weights
then flipping it to see what works best. Great idea!!

Thanks for your help.

Hi, Sharon! Alas, I have no firm nutritional advice to give you: I do not have the academic qualifications to do so; AND if I were to come clean (pardon the pun) about my own "diet" the Clean Police would drag me away in handcuffs, so I can't speak from a personal experience of virtue-eating.

I'll say this much: I have no time for the whole subject of scale weight. I think that particular little datum tells a committed exerciser and healthy eater precisely less than nothing of value, because it does not denote body composition (i.e. fat mass, fat-free mass such as bone and muscle, water, blood, waste matter, etc.) And I frankly think those scales that purport to make those distinctions are a sham.

I say this: if you are exercising up to your capabilities in terms of intensity, frequency, mode and duration per session, AND if you are dedicating a proper amount of time to strength- and muscle-mass building, your body will tell YOU what it wants and in what quantities, as long as you listen to what it has to say. Forget the WW / SB / Zone / Atkins / 40-30-30 mishegoss, and go on the What-Works-For-SHARON program.

The only advice I now have for you is: invest in a good quality ACADEMIC TEXTBOOK on the fundamentals of nutrition, read it, and internalize it. "Nutrition: Concepts and Controversies" (whatever edition is the latest) by Dr. Eleanor Noss Whitney (whom I was priveleged to know back in the '70's) is very good. Get away from the Dot-Com crap about proper eating, and get with good sound science.

Thanks sooooo much. I will check out that book.

You know it's funny. Last week I did nothing but ate what I wanted and needed. The scale did show a loss. I, too, do not worship the scale. I do know, however, that I am not where I once was and I need to get back to my ideal.

Thanks for your advice.
