A good old-fashioned summertime American meal

Each week, my local grocery store features products that you can buy on sale such that you can prepare an entire meal or really close to one.

This week’s feature . . . hot dogs, potato salad, corn on the cob, baked beans, and garden salad.

I thought that tonight, I would prepare the good old-fashioned summertime American meal. It’s been about 18 months or so since we’ve eaten like this, so why not? We probably won’t eat this again, especially this meal.

Well, I thought it would be a good idea to post the nutritional breakdown of this fine meal so everyone could understand more about food choices and what is in them.

I’ll list the foods, the serving size, their calories, fat calories, fat grams, carb grams, fiber grams, sugar grams and protein grams.

Here we go:

Eckrich Lite Frank, 1 frank, 100, 60, 6, 3, 0, 2, 5
Wheat Hot Dog bun, 1 bun, 90, 5, .5, 19, 2, 3, 4
Mustard, Ketchup, Chopped onion, 1 tsp ½ Tbls, 2 Tbls, 19, 2, 0, 4, 1, 2, 1
Mustard Potato Salad, ½ cup, 150, 80, 9, 14, 2, 4, 2
Bush’s Original Baked Beans, ½ cup, 150, 10, 1, 29, 7, 5, 7
Corn on the cob, 1 ear, 77, 8, 1, 17, 2, 2, 3
Light butter and salt, 2 tsp, ¼ tsp, 33, 31, 4, 0, 0, 0, 1
Dole Greener Selection salad, 2 ¼ cups, 22, 0, 0, 4, 1, 3, 1
Ranch Salad Dressing, 4 Tbls, 309, 281, 32, 5, 0, 4, 3

Totals: 950, 477, 54, 95, 15, 25, 27

Calories from fat: 50%

Maybe you add a bit more variety, maybe you don’t. But typically Americans who estimate food portions will increase the portion size by 33 to 50% of what is really the serving size. Except for the salad, it served six and I calculated it based into 4 servings and the dressing is the average serving size that Americans put on their salad.

Now, I choose lite franks and light butter. My questions to you are the following:

1.) Did you have any idea how many calories were in this good old-fashioned summertime American meal?
2.) Are the choices that I’ve made good choices? Why?
3.) How can I healthy up this meal?
4.) How much do you think the calories and other values would increase if I served hamburgers or brawts?

Let’s talk, summertime is approaching quickly.

Keta. :D

I eat that meal myself every day

but

It's a tofu hotdog 80 calories, 0 grams of fat
Eziekel bun 140 calories, 1 gram of fat
dijon mustard
diced red onion
1 cup Fantastic Foods instant black
beans reconstituted with 3 tsp. salsa added 260 calories
salad with Seeds of Change
roasted red pepper dressing (2 tsp) 100 calories

and a half of a cantaloupe

that's a lot of food for the calories!

In fact, Keta, since you're so well read on nutrition, if you don't mind, I'm going to lay out what I eat almost every day and see if you think it's adequate

Breakfast

Omelet made with 5 egg whites, spring onion, green pepper and topped with salsa

Oatmeal cooked (no sugar) (.75 cup dried) with 1/8 cup 1% milk on it

1/4 cantaloupe (about 370 calories)

Lunch (as above) or alternatively

1 boca burger
1 eziekiel bun
1/4 avocado
1 cup steamed broccoli
half a cantaloupe

Mid afternoon snack - 1 cup Fiber One with half a cup of fresh raspberries or strawberries, no milk

Dinner

Two Morninstar veggie sausage patties (160 calories)
1 cup Stonyfield full fat blueberry yogurt (160 calories)
fresh fruit of some kind

I stop eating every day no later than 5:30 p.m.
