LAST EDITED ON Jun-19-02 AT 04:02AM (Est)[p]I talked my way into a part-time trainer position at our local Y...I can't believe it!

Saturday I marched into the Y that's 5 minutes from my house (which has JUST been remodeled, what timing!), showed the Health & Fitness director my ACE Certificate, talked to her a while (related my Bally's horror story, too) and she called me back last night. The ACE test focus on how to communicate with your clients is just what she was looking for. They have been getting flooded with calls for personal trainers since they remodeled, so my timing was perfect.

The Y has LOTS of free training, and I will work with people there. This means a ready made client base, and really great experience.

I'm just floored. So, either that ACE paper is worth it's weight in gold, or I'm a monumental BS-er, or BOTH!

So, I'm going to be very busy teaching two aerobics classes a week, plus working out of the Y, PLUS working my full time job. I guess this will cut into my Fox News Channel time! ;-)

Picture me doing the Martin Short/Ed Grimley happy dance! If you don't know what I look like, picture the lady from "Missing Link" doing the Ed Grimley dance.

Congratulations, Honeybunch!!! How absolutely awesome! I'm sure you'll impart nothing but the best both to your class participants and PT clients. I may have to go and check out my local Y, if they're hiring persons of your caliber. And hey, you can still catch all those late night replays on FNC!

CONGRATULATIONS, HONEYBUNCH!

That sounds like an awesome situation for you, not to mention your upcoming participants and clients!

Way to go!

Congratulations, Honeybunch! I'm curious though, what was your Bally's horror story about? The only reason I ask is that I'll be certified (hopefully) in Nov. and will be looking for a job soon after that. :)

I joined Bally's in November, and they did their own assessment of me with weight, body fat composition, etc. My body fat percentage had been around 18 percent for a couple of years (I got it measured twice at the same Y I'll be working for) and the guy at Bally's said it was 29%. I was horrified and wondered what I had done, and if the folks at the Y knew what they were doing. Bally's had convinced me I was way out of shape, and suggested I buy a package of personal trainer sessions for some outlandish price.

I went to the ACE website, found a trainer nearby, and she measured my % as 18%. I could see from the points she was measuring that the Bally's guy had done it wrong. I wrote a complaint letter to the Bally's head office telling them what a horrible experience it had been, and a guy called me back from the regional office and said the trainer was being "re-trained."

The facility is wonderful, but the staff leaves a lot to be desired. I would run to the nearest Y, if I were you, and try to jam your foot in the door like I did.

What kind of certification are you getting?

I usually lurk, but have read many of your postings and admired your good sense and balanced comments. I've also followed your training progress and want to say that you deserve getting the best of everything after all your hard work. Congratulations! I wish I could be one of your clients.

THAT'S GREAT!!! And just think you'll be getting in your aerobics two times a week while teaching!! How fantastic.

Honeybunch, I'm getting the ACE personal trainer certification. My husband is in the Army so I'm thinking about getting a job at one of the gyms here on post. I would really like to help other military spouses. After hearing your story I definately want to check out my local Y too!

Are you taking one of the prep-for-the-test workshops? I took one through Exercise Etc. and I'm sure glad I did.

Yes, I've got the home study course but I'm also going to take the Exercise Etc. Exam Prep in October 2 weeks before the exam. I've been studying/learning on my own, but I definately need a classroom setting to go over anything I'm unsure of. :)

I just wanted to say "Congratulations!" I can't help but think that when we are truly following God's will (or a higher calling if you don't believe in God per se) that our lives will take pleasant and abundant turns. I'm sure that you will be successful and happy in your new endeavors. Good work! Life is good!
