A Birthday Present Disappointment

Would this bother you?

O.k, my neighbor invited my son to her DD birthday back in DECEMBER! I just wrote out a check and slipped it into the card. Guess what? Check was just cashed yesterday which means my the DD never got to go pick out something for her birthday at that time. And, now I have less money than I figured as I thought the check was cashed long ago.
Got to say, I am alittle disappointed and annoyed.

My daughter's brownie pack leader did the same to me. I wrote her a check for the year's subs. Then we hit dire financial straits and I asked her not to cash it yet. She agreed, and then offered my daughter a scholarship, which I gladly acepted. She said she would rip up the cheque. Then last week she informed me that she had cashed it "by mistake" along with all the other cheques she received from cookie sales. I originally gave her this cheque last September and she lied to me.

Talk about disappointed in the woman.

I am just thinking that perhaps mom and dad just cashed the check for themselves at this point since DD birthday was back in December.I know, a wild assumption on my part, but what the heck! I mean, what is the point now? Did it take DD 4 months to find herself a birthday present? Don't really think so. If it were me, and I came across a check from my neighbor from that long ago, I would just rip it up as I wouldn't want to screw up their checkbook. JMHO

Charlotte,

How does that screw up your checkbook? Don't you take note of uncashed checks?

CHarlotte:

I completley agree with you. It disrupts our finances and it looks very likely the girl did not get her present. Put your neighbour on the spot: ask her what she got with the money for her daughter and why she cashed it so late. She needs to learn of the consequences to you of her actions. Otherwise, how can she learn from them and improve her relations with others? Your neighbour is pissing ME off!

I think a bunch of us should form a group of vigilantes. We can post outrageous things, and each week, whoever has the saddest most unfair story, we all go there and kick some butt.

Candi- you sound like my husband. LOL! Good point though. I know it is still my fault, but I am stilled annoyed.

Clare- yeah, I hear ya.

I'm going to play Devil's advocate. Possibly, the parents traded the check for cash and set the check aside to make a later deposit. DH banks somewhere in Texas and will save deposits and mail them all in at once.

Candi- Now I feel better. Maybe that happened. Dunno. I guess maybe I should just "bury it under the covers" and move on.

Charlotte~~

Oh, no, Charlotte. You have every right to be upset. I just know that's how we handle things at our house sometimes and didn't know if you explored that option.

Not that I want you to stay upset but based on your original post I understand why you would be.

Hi Charlotte!! Maybe the parents had cash and gave it to her at the time of her birthday and just put the check a side for them to cash later on. Sometimes that is what I do.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe they got her something and didn't get a chance to cash the check.

I HATE going to the bank so it takes me forever to cash a check. I figure if the person wrote me a check it should be in their check register so when I cash it, it shouldn't create problems. I do know it can be annoying for people tho if checks aren't cashed on a timely basis, so I do try to get to the bank, but I'm not that great about it.

Charlotte, I can relate to that, I use Mary Kay products, well in 2001 I wrote my mary kay lady who is also a good friend of mine a check for almost 30 dollars, well she called me last may or june and asked me if I could write another check because she put it somewhere and had just found it so it never got cashed. Well at the time I didn't have the extra 30 dollars to give her and I figured why is this my problem...
But I did end up giving her the money several months later, I was in no hurry because after all it was her own fault.....
I would be annoyed too. The next time I have to write my friend a check I will make sure she cashes it, cause I will tell her if she does that again, it will be her loss....... Rhonda

Charlotte,

As for the little girl not getting her present, maybe she was saving her birthday money to by something specific. I used to do that as a kid. It used to drive my grandmother nuts because I would hold onto checks for six months sometimes. I have a 3 1/2 year old nephew who's starting to do the same thing.

The thing is this, you write it down in your check register and subtract it, but the person doesn't cash it right away, and so when you go to balance your check book even though you have subtracted it, the bank hasn't, so the money is still there, and you balance your check book and write the amount back into your account eventually. So its better that the person cash the check right away to save the check writer future problems, some people live from pay check to paycheck and don't have alot of extra money around.... rhonda

A personal check has a time limit. My bank has set it at 90 days.

I've had to rewrite checks. I refuse to pay someone's bounce fee if they snooze on my check.

Charlotte, Just posting because I was just in the opposite situation. My son got two checks for his birthday and it took me forever to cash them. The reason, he got alot of money for his bday and decided half was for spending, and the other half was to get saved. So the checks I held onto were getting deposited in his account. The other thing your post reminded me of was an episode of Seinfeld. Jerry got a check from his Gramma every year, but never cashed them because he felt she couldn't really afford it. Kramer found out, told him that it was probably hurting Grammas feelings and that he should cash the checks. Well, as you can imagine it turned into a whole mess where Grammas bank had moved and she got lost and well really funny episode started because Jerry wasn't cashing her checks. Have a good day Carolyn

But if you wrote the check, then you shouldn't add that back into your account then. Or maybe contact the person to see if they are going to cash it. Personally, I always assume the person is going to cash it, but then again I've posted I'm a lazy check casher :)
