60 minutes of cardio...

Hi Cathe, and Everyone!

Ok, this is one of those questions that I feel foolish for asking, but here goes anyway. When you recommend an amount of time for a cardio session, are you just counting the time at which we are working our hardest, or do you include the warmup too? For instance, if I am doing Powermax, I set the counter on the VCR back to zero after the warmup, and then I do all three sections. Those three sections add up to around 40 or so minutes...most of which I am working intensely, but some of which I might be working less intensely, like at the beginning of a new segment when you are building up the moves. Do I count that as 40 minutes of cardio, or less because I am not working out at my maximum intensity the whole time? Or when you say 60 minutes, do you mean from warmup all the way thru cool down? I'm hoping you mean the latter, but I think you must mean us to count just the time we are working very hard. :-hmmm

Thanks,

Veronica

When WSF magazine posted their awesome "Exercise Diet" article

They recommended 3x a week 60 minutes of cardio at 75-80% of your max hr.

I took that to mean - for 60 minutes you are working out brutally hard ... and thus, you would need to tack on more time for the warmup and cooldown.

RE: When WSF magazine posted their awesome "Exercise Diet" article

Thanks Leela!

What magazine is WSF? They must be targeting hardcore advanced exercisers, as 60 minutes 3x a week at 75-80% of max hr might cause beginners not to stick with the program.

Women's sports and fitness...

And WSF is no longer in print. It was a very decent fitness magazine - they replaced my subscription wiht "Self" which occasionally has some good fitness stuff, but mostly annoys me (I'm just the wrong target audience. Too old, and my lifestyle is too different from what they promote).

Yes, 60 minutes 3x a week at 75-80 is brutally tough. Self (in one of their better articles) had a program last month (I guess they call it "Step one" ) where you exercise aerobically in 60-70% for a month. This month they are saying to crank it up to 70-75.

I think like Cathe, magazines have to pick their audience. Cathe's tapes are also really not for beginners - although beginners can certainly use them with modifications or using lighter weights, etc... but I appreciated that article in WSF because at that time, I was at a level where I could really see following that program. Sadly, time wasn't on my side with my job and little one.

After this baby is born (late august), I intend to really whip back into shape, and I am going to follow the WSF exercise diet for a period of 8 weeks as one of my "phases" of exercise.

RE: Women's sports and fitness...

I wanted to add - ANY amount of aerobic activity is beneficial, and the beauty of it is - you gain endurance and strength and are able to handle more - the more you exercise. But often, the guidelines that are given out (i.e. the old 20 minutes 3x a week) aren't good enough for people who have gotten used to exercise to really see any major changes. You see the changes initially, but have to keep altering and challenging your workout to really confuse that body.

I thought the body for life program sounded "easy" until I tried it. Although the cardio is only 20 odd minutes, it is a very HARD 20 odd minutes! I found sustaining my heart rate at a level 8, 9 or 10 to be VERY hard, even if for a very short time. 10 was just the worst 60 seconds of my life!

RE: Women's sports and fitness...

I was soooo upset when the magazine folded. That was the best one out there. It had fascinating articles that weren't "fluff". I don't think we will see anything like that again.

RE: Women's sports and fitness...

To add insult to injury, they replaced the subscription with "Self" which is mostly fluff!!!

But the butt doctor article is great, and now that i'm past my first trimester illness, i've been doing those exercises! I swear, I see a difference in my butt shape already.

RE: Women's sports and fitness...

I agree, Self is ridiculous. I threw my last and final (thank goodness)issue straight into the trash. I don't have time to waste on that.

RE: Women's sports and fitness...

I'm getting annoyed with Fitness and Shape magazines also. Too much fluff stuff, and increasingly geared to teeney-boppers. I keep going back to Men's Health, but still renewed my subscriptions to F & Sh because I was afraid I'd miss something. Dumb, eh?

RE: Women's sports and fitness...

Have you tried Oxygen or Her's Muscle & Fitness magazines?

RE: Women's sports and fitness...

I had an Oxygen subscription. But that is extreme in the other end. I don't mind the body building at all - but I do mind the supplement stuff -esp the shameless hawking of "Hydroxycut". That, and of course, articles on tatooing your makup on your face, fasting.

WSF was the best balance for me, in terms of what is out there.

Oh well... luckily there are other things out there, like Cathe tapes, to keep me motivated!

RE: Women's sports and fitness...

I agree with Leela. At first I was very excited when I discovered Oxygen Mag. but after getting about halfway through the first issue I realized that they are basically selling, selling, selling. That annoyed me although some of the articles were good. They do have an interesting web site though. My favourite is M&F Women.

Thanks!

Thanks for your answer Cathe! Although my fitness level is improving with the continued use of your tapes, I just can't imagine going full blast for 60 minutes! :-tired.

Veronica

thank goodness

All I'm gonna say is THANK GOODNESS. Can you imagine 60 minutes of Power Max--plus the warm up and cool down?
