Runcrazy

Cathlete
Good Morning!

I just finished my coffee and am off to spin so I'll check back later! Just getting us started!

Hello Again! I did Cardio Coach Press Play which is just over an hour with warm up and stretch (on my spinning bike). It was a fantastic workout today! The stars were lined up and I was energized! I've got the "cardio glow!" :D

Well, time to grab some breakfast and then on to clean house!

DH and I just finished putting together my Power Tower! It's nicer than I expected but obviously not as sturdy as our big squat rack. It will serve my purposes nicely! The bar you use for doing pull-up/chin-ups has thick neoprene on it so that is very nice and it came with two handle straps (like the handles on tubing) that you can use also. I don't remember seeing them use handles in STS.

Of course the big question from DH when he saw what it was: Where are you going to put this? I said I would figure that out later. To be honest, I think it will be a pain to assemble/reassemble even if it only takes 5 or 10 minutes so it will be much easier to leave it set up. I'll let you know later how this episode evolves! I have today to figure it out! Anyway, so now I'm excited to start using it tomorrow! Meso 2 here I come!!!!

I need to get some reading done today also. I have been reading Pillars of the Earth for the last month and need to get it finished as Diana Gabaldon's new book arrived on my doorstep yesterday (are any of you familiar with the Outlander series?). I guess we haven't talked about reading much, but I love to read besides all my other 100 things I love to do and can't fit in!!!! Oh and I actually have a Kindle so I do most of my reading on my Kindle.

Okay, Now I'm off to clean house!

I finished phase 2 of CLX, one more 4 week phase to go!

Jo Did you have a nice anniversary dinner? How many years is it? My pf really bothered me while walking for hours (while shopping) last weekend but seems much better since we got home. I wonder if all the walking although painful actually helped because after we were home a day it seemed much better! I've hardly noticed it at all this week and yet it was extremely painful while shopping at times:confused::confused: Anyways I told my friends that I wouldn't run this weekend just to be on the safe side.

What is a kindle? Is that where you download books?? I am a avid reader as well. We have a great library about 5 mins away. The whole family goes every 3 weeks and I usually get 5-6 books. I usually read for a hour in bed each night.

Kim

Speaking of reading here is the next chapter. This is really helping me absorb the info so hope you don't mind:D:D

Chapter 6: Sugar, Fat, and Salt are Reinforcing

-rewarding foods tend to be reinforcing, meaning that they keep us coming back for more.
-scientists ask 2 questions to determine whether animals find a substance reinforcing: are they willing to work to obtain it, and do they respond to other stimuli they've learned to associate with that food
- by these criteria, sugar, fat and salt are clearly reinforcing

-we once thought that in the absence of hunger, food could not serve as an effective reward. That idea proved to be wrong. During experiments, animals will work for foods that are high in sugar and fat even if they are not hungry.
-Animals are willing to work even harder for foods that are high in sugar AND fat. The combination of fat and sugar is a strong reinforcer. The breaking point at which animal will no longer work for the reward (as the work gets to hard) is slightly lower than the breaking point for cocaine. Animals are willing to work almost as hard to get either one.
-scientists have been able to determine that in products combining sugar, fat, and flavoring;sugar exerts the greatest influence.
-Fat is also reinforcing, but calorie for calorie, sucrose is the dominant factor

-the power of high sugar, high-fat foods is further amplified as cues become associated with them
-Cues such as the location where the food has previously been available and the events associated with past consumption can also become reinforcers. (making you want to eat more)
-In time, these cues become as important in food-seeking behaviour as the food itself. For example a bowl of M & M's cam be reinforcing before I touch a single one. The visual cue of seeig the M& Ms makes you want one before you even have one.
-cues associated with the pleasure response demand our attention, motivate our behaviour, and stimulate the urge we call "wanting". When those cues are present , we learn to pursue food with greater vigor to secure the expected reward.
- With experience, the assocation between cues and food becomes stronger, we pursue the food more frequently, and the resulting pleasure leads us to repeat the behaviour. A cyle of cue-urge-reward is set in motion and eventually becomes a habit.

-in animal studies, animals prefer places where they had been exposed to foods high in sugar or fat in the past
-For humans, too, location is one of the most potent cues. eg. passing the mall where you know you''ll find a New York Fries and you experience a desire that you didn't have a moment ago

Conclustion of this chapter:
-evidence that high-sugar, high-fat foods are reinforcing, comes from 2 key findings in animal studies. 1) animals are willing to work harder for those foods and 2) the foods intensify the power of cues, such as where the animals once encountered the food.
- 3 other featues of food also exert a powerful influence on our desire for more
1)quantity. Give a person 2 scoops of ice cream rather than one, and they'll eat more. Portion size matters.
2)Concentration of rewarding ingredients. Adding more sugar or fat boost its desirabilty ( up to a point)
3) Variety play an improtant role. Providing access to different kinds of foods makes you eat more. Making the foods more interesting like adding chocolate chips or different textures (likes oreos with bitter chocolate oand sweet cream) makes you eat more of the food.

WHAT THE EVIDENCE TELLS US is that sugar and fat, as well as the cues predicting that sugar and fat are available, can condition the behaviour of those who are vulnerable.

Some interesting thoughts.

Hi Kim! Well we ended up not going to dinner. DH had a headache (I think caused by neck pain) so didn't want to go downtown. So we invited some friends over and had pizza which was fine also! We'll just go to dinner another night. We've been married 21 years! LOVE IT!

The Kindle is Amazon's eReader. I have their 2nd generation which was released in February and next to my fitness toys and DVD's, it's the best purchase I've ever made! I've used it every day since I got it. Like you, I read every night in bed and have done so since I was a kid. But, I still go to the library and the bookstore and I belong to a couple of book clubs (though haven't bought in a long while). Not all books are available on the Kindle though they add more every day. I think they have about 400,000 titles on the Kindle (more than enough)! It's determined by the publisher whether or not a book will be available as an ebook.

Thanks for continuing to share your information you're reading. I find it very interesting. And I hope your foot gets completely healed soon! It must be very annoying!

Hi Guys,

Jo, I'm glad you got the tower set up and are pleased with it! The handle things you were talking about that you don't remember sts using were added later as a bonus feature, they introduced it at the road trip (i watched the clip, that's how I know....)
I would have no idea whatsoever where I would put a tower like this in my house and there is no way I would disassemble it every time, so I guess I have to wait until I have a room for fitness equipment all by itself...LOL! Let me know when you figure out where to put yours!

I am another book worm! I used to walk home from school reading a book... I haven't had as much time to read with the little ones, but I still get my fix. Tell me more about Kindle, I've seen it mentioned but never bothered to look into the details. Do you buy the gadget and you download like from a library or do you pay per title and how much is it anyway? Is it big enough to read comfortably? Is there a way to find out what books are available before you buy? What is the series you are reading about? I usually pick historical fiction (being a history major...) but I love just about anything that is even close to well written... I'm not really picky.

Kim, I'm glad your foot has healed so much since your trip! Keep giving it some TLC! Thanks for the summary! Did you son make the team?

I did Pure Strength legs today and my stars were not all lined up. I was lifting lighter weights, what I use for muscle endurance style workouts and I was tired! I wonder what is up? then we went apple picking and of course had to sample the apple pastries there. The petting zoo had piglets and my kids both got to hold one and feed it a bottle of milk! It was too cute!

The apples were way picked over and we ended up being lucky to fill our bags which were very tiny this year. I guess there wasn't enough water for a good crops. We are going to make some yummy clean apple crumble with it and I have a couple of whole wheat pie shells I plan on filling as well, yum!

Yummy, apple crumble. What a nice fall activity to do!

Jo, do you have to pay for every Kindle download?

The final cuts for the hockey team are tomorrow. DH is pretty sure that ds will be cut. There are 4 levels of hockey and this is by far the very best/most elite teams. (and we Canadians take our hockey very seriously:rolleyes::rolleyes:) These teams travel alot, they have a paid coach and seperate goalie coach:rolleyes:. All the players have to wear dress shirt and ties to all the games.
I think ds will end up at the second highest level which is fine by me. He's pretty realistic about it and so hopefully won't be to upset tomorrow. I think he's done great considering that he missed all of last year due to a broken leg, he has a visual impairment and that his asthma meds keep his growth stunted so he is the smallest goalie trying out. I'm a very proud mom for him making it this far in the process. Also it will be a big sigh of relief not to write a cheque for $2000.
So if he doesn't make this team (we'll know tomorrow) then he has three ice times for next week so they can determine who's playing at the next level. It just goes on forever seems like.

Hey just a quick pop in to say I think I am home for good! We got in last night at about 11 pm and I have been running all day and still did not get to the grocery store. I had to clean and dust even though no one has been here except for the cat it felt stuffy and closed up. So I cleaned today too Jo.
This job has been a real stress but I think we will not have to go back. Dh and I were there 2 weeks and every day almost, we worked 13 hrs but the other crew (whose job it was) would go home early every day. So we did what we could and left them to finish. We thought why should we work ourselves to death to finish a job that we did not start. We were trying to help out the company that we sub from and I think we did a pretty good job but the other crew will have to work through the weekend to get it finished...I don't know if they will or not. But all I know is that we did the best we could and dh and I are worn out. We are taking a few days off.

I am not working out this weekend but am starting the sept. rotation on Mon and I can not wait to start my new dvds.

Cendrine-You will have to keep me posted on what happens with the apples. I am sure the fatigue is just from your hectic schedule here lately, with your brother coming. Is he still there?

Jo-I can not believe you have been married for 21 yrs. You look 21 in your avatar! Let us know if the power tower works as well as it did for the gals in sts.

Kim-Wow, 2000 dollars is alot of money for hockey. I hope you ds is happy with whatever the outcome is. I have not been able to keep up with the chapter summaries but I plan on going back and reading up in the next few days. Thanks for taking the time to post them so thoroughly.

I am off to lay and do nothing and drift into a peaceful sleep in the middle of the woods here with no busy highway noise or people opening or shutting doors. I do take peace and quiet for granted sometimes...

Have a great evening!

Rachel

Hi again! Rachel!!! So glad to have you back with us! Now you can get back to a good schedule!

Kim, I can't believe how much it costs for some of these sports. A gal I work with just shelled out $1,000 so her dd could play soccer. I'm glad that ds has done so well! I can imagine how proud you and DH are!

Cendrine, it seems what you're going through this week is what was happening to me last week. Your energy will come back! I know its frustrating though!

Here's some info on the Kindle:

It's just like reading a book only better! They've done the text and background in such a way that you have the effect of pages and it's easy to read in sunlight. The battery lasts up to 2 weeks if you turn the wireless off. I only charge it when I think maybe I should (nice feature). It has a dictionary on it so if you're reading and run across a word you don't know (as I often do) you just move your cursor to the word and the dictionary definition pops up. You can buy books online at Amazon or on the Kindle itself. Either way, your book will be downloaded within 60 seconds after purchase. It holds approximately 1500 books. The wireless is provided by Amazon and it's free. The great thing is now I don't have to ever think about what book to take with me...I take them ALL!!!:D There's other great features; like you can highlight text, bookmark, add comments (which go to a file). Also, it know where you left off (don't have to bookmark) and when you open the book back up it will go right to your last page read. It doesn't go by page numbers but by percent read which is different but I like it.

Regarding books: bestsellers are usually around $9.99 but older books are any where from $1 - $7. There are tons of free books too. Probably half of the books I have I got for free. I also like the classics and I got the entire Charles Dickens collection (200 books and stories) for $5.49 as well as complete works of Mark Twain, Leo Tolstoy and a couple others also for $5.49.

Well I hit post but wasn't done. The other thing is people think they don't want to give up the feel of their book. I was that way too. But now I prefer it as it's so light and thin the last time I picked up a paperback it felt very cumbersome! (I absolutely still read other books however!) How's that for a shift in thinking? I think right now they cost about $299. I paid a little more but they've since lowered the price since they're more popular now. Go to Amazon.com and read all the info on it. I know I'm not covering everything, but everything I like! Even though it has some great features, the dictionary is the feature I like the best and use the most often.

Cendrine, the Outlander Series is historical fiction. It's about a gal in 1945 that is on her honeymoon in the British Isles and gets thrown back in time (like 16th century) while visiting some stones in Scotland (similar to StoneHenge I think). The events are based on facts but it's a great story. She has husband in current century and one in the past! Anyway, book #7 just came out this week. All the books are long (like 800 - 1000 pages) but it's a fantastic series. You can read the reviews on Amazon. Search for Outlander by Diana Gabaldon which is the first book.
