417!!

Oops, just found 2 more, I guess that makes it 419.

Fortunately for me DH has come to accept my need for videos over the last 20 years and even supports as he knows how important they are to me. Only once has he commented that I could do a different workout each day of the year. I have told him several times over the years that if the house was on fire we needed to save my video collection since those Firm videos are not replaceable.

We have been having trouble recording tv recently in our house so this week he started to researching dvr's, etc. For most things we are quite cheap and still use our vcr's every day because they work fine so there is no apparent need to replace them. Well, after Monday night searching for replacements he came home slightly upset. It seems we missed an entire level of technology while being contented with our vcr's and couple of dvd players. He sat on the bed and very earnestly and concerned told me that I better better get started on transferring my vhs workouts onto dvd's or I am going to miss the window for this happening (is that about the sweetest thing ever). Since I had just moved and counted my videos I knew what a project it was going to be (inwardly groaning). So now I have started transferring my videos, 6 down, about 300 to go. It is kind of fun because I get to see all of the workouts again while they are transferring. I figure the whole project will take a few months, but boy will I be happy when it is done. In the mean time I will get to revisit a few old video friends. And when I am done I will know how many workouts I really own, a very scary thought indeed.

Shayne,
I am also way behind the times... I still have lots of old videos & have no clue how to transfer them onto DVD's. How difficult is that?

What sort of equipment do you need to do that? I've always thought I could always keep my old VCR to play them. Do you think that's not such a great plan??

Thanks, Linda

linlos - I sort of had the same plan, just to keep my old vcr and keep playing them. It never dawned on me that there could be a problem with that. But our vcr's are starting to have problems and fixing them doesn't seem to be the right thing to do anymore. DH sort of had the same plan which is why we were both so taken aback at the technology situation. It was so sweet for DH to immediately think of how important my videos were to me and that the situation needed to be addressed right now.

We got a dvr/vcr last year that copies the vhs to dvd. It is incredibly simple, once you know the steps. Of course the first one was very stressful as we had no clue what to do. But now it is really easy. You really just go to the menu and click copy from vcr to dvd. It copies in real time so it is time consuming, but anything is worth it to preserve my videos. In the past two days I have copied 8 videos. I really think the hardest part of the project is going to be labeling the dvd's. I keep trying to figure out what to put on the label; name, length, equipment... Oh the possibilities.

Good luck.

Thanks Shayne,

I appreciate the tips. I will now know what I will need to look for when I buy a DVR. We still just have DVD and VCR.
Good luck getting them all done. While you are transferring them, perhaps you could choose to do 'that particular'workout that day.
Your post has made me think about my old original Firm workouts. Since I got STS I am hooked on them and haven't done much else. But, when I finish this 2nd time around on STS, I should remember to do the old Firms!!

I hope you get them done ...I see what you mean about labelling... lots of info. you will want and you won't have the cases to look at.

I copied my VHS to DVD a couple years ago and I put the VHS cover/sleeve/box in my printer/copier and copied the front and the back of the it and shrank it to around 65% (or something like that - can't remember) then I glued both to a piece of paper cut to the size of the CD jewel case that I put the DVD disc in. I had to experiment to get the right size and everything, but you end up having the exact info from the box.

Thanks for the idea. I had originally thought I would put them in a big zippered cd case and flip through them for my workout, but I knew I would never know which workout is which since I usually know which workout I want to do by cover. Now that I am thinking about it I could also get individual DVD cases and copy the current covers for those. Hmmm...the possibilities. I am getting pretty excited now.

Right now I am transferring Mega Step Blast. Wow, what a "blast" from the past. It is an absolute riot. The workout is solid, but the clothes, hair and hair accessories are a so funny. They were all so in. Absolutely what you had to wear. I totally want to do the workout just for the nostalgia. Are we going to look back in 20 years and laugh uproariously at what we were wearing today (and I am feeling pretty cute today)?
