$400 I-P(lywo)od?!

My 16 yo Elizabeth has been working since November and been very penny wise. She decided to make a major purchase and get an I-Pod, so my 3 daughters and I shopped around yesterday and Elizabeth found the one she wanted and bought it. She was so excited and I was excited for her(and proud that she has been so sensible with her money). We piled into the car tuckered out from shopping and happy to head home. Elizabeth opened her factory sealed I-Pod and promptly says, 'we have to go back Mom, all that's in here is a piece of wood!'. We go back to the store, I go to the electronics dept. she goes to customer service. Electronics tells me that was the last one in the store, over to customer service and the clerk is stunned at what she's told and goes into the office to consult with the manager. They took about 10 minutes, he comes out and asks what happened while scratching his head, I said, 'she's getting her money back right?' his response is 'we'll do what we can for her' and off he goes to Electronics and we wait. Poor Elizabeth, she's frustrated, I'm getting into Mama Bear mode worried that she won't get her money back and feeling her pain, at 16 this was a pretty monumentous purchase for her. Long story short, the manager approved the refund and figures that it must have been tampered with at Apple and that she will be compensated somehow for getting the run around. She just wants an I-Pod, not a story to tell......anyone ever heard of this happening to someone else?

OMG, how disappointing for a teenager who put out that kind of hard-earned and saved money. I have never had such a thing happen.

I can't imagine opening the box and finding a block of wood!!! Even more unimaginable is the idea that the manager would hesitate for even 1 minute about refunding your money. Shameful! Absolutely shameful!

BTW, kudos to your daughter for her fiscal responsibility and strong work ethic

What is more unacceptable is someone bought that package and substituted a block of wood for the IPOD a really evil thing to do...

Then the store resold an item as new that had been previously sold ... also illegal. Whenever you return something like that it has to sold as used, refurbished, factory recertified, rewrapped or whatever other titles they use.

Dave: It really is quite a mystery as to when and where this occurred. I asked the manager if it was possible that someone purchased it at his store, made the switch and returned it but he didn't think so as the cellophane wrapper was intact when Elizabeth opened it, no tape, no broken seams, she said that the circular sticky tab directly on the cardboard box looked like it may have been tampered with, maybe someone re-shrink wrapped it....I dunno.....the manager was waiting to hear from another store, he was very curious about the weight of the one we got compared to an untampered products. He said that the scanner would have caught the error if it's weight was different than stock....plot thickens....I've been trying to contact Apple's iPod customer service only to be tangled up in a web of unrelated automated options, even finding a general customer service e-mail address is a challenge.
