40 # dumbbell during plie squats in S&H

Hi Cathe; Just finished S&H legs and shoulders. Everytime I do this workout I always have a question regarding that 40 lb dumbbell. Well I don't have one but I do have 2 20# dumbbells. Could I use these instead during plie squats? Also the placement of these two have me a bit confused. If I hold one in each hand I find myself wondering if my shoulders are straight, so is it okay to have each one basically sitting on each shoulder while doing the plie squats?
Today I ended up holding both 20 # within both my hands and my thumbs hurt after that set. What would be the best placement of the dumbbells during plie squats?

Hi Shywolf! The best placement is one that you can do comfortably for the whole set with good form. If holding your weights up on the shoulders does that for you, stick with it. Keep up the great work!

I just wanted to make sure it was okay with having them up on my shoulders without diverting too much from the inner legs
 
You could also try resting them on the hip area (where the leg meets the hip), as long as that doesn't interfere with the movement of the leg...that MAY be more comfortable than the shoulders.
 
or if you have a barbell, you can put the barbell on your shoulders like you do for the regular squats...

I got a woman's weight vest last year. It has two parts ... the main vest holds 15 lbs, but you can slip on another smaller piece that contains an additional 10 lbs.

I mention all that because 25 lbs is perfect for some of the workouts with squats and I've found I love using the weight vest instead of hanging on to dumbbells or a barbell.

For those who are lucky enough to have a Smith machine, that is perfect for squats and lunges. You don't have to hoist all that weight over your head.
