Muffin Top. I am not to experienced in the weight area as I am learning but it seems when I lift weights I bulk up on my lower half.

And I am not talking heavy weights either I use 20lbs for my lower half and I follow her sets and reps. I am pear shaped.

I wanted to cut out the weights and do all cardio for one month and see if this makes a change in my low half. Does that make sense?

Cutting out the soda was a great start! I changed my diet one step at a time. I was making my breakfast one morning some 20 years ago and decided to try my toast without butter. It didn't take me long eliminate virtually all the added butter from my diet. From there I made additional changes, some more subtle than others. Each change builds upon the others. Once you begin to make the changes and accept them, you will find that they become easier to make and your food will actually taste better. It like retraining your taste buds.

I agree with many of the others who have posted here, educate yourself. Learn to read labels. Learn about the various sources of fats- which ones are heart healthy and which to avoid. Avoid frying- bake and broil instead....There are many things you can do. Once you get started you may even find it challenging and fun.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy an occasional cookie or piece of cake, but once I have had that occasional treat, I don't feel like I've got to have more to be satisfied.

Good luck to you. I know you can do it!

Definitely do NOT stop lifting weights. Resistance trainging isn't just for the cosmetic results, but to be strong, to have strong bones, etc.

Instead, change the type of weight training you do, focusing on cardio/weigth circuit workouts and whole-body, moderate-weight, higher rep workouts or light-weight functional-fitness workouts.

I think everyone over 35 (and probably all women over 25) should do some kind of resistance exercise (except, perhaps, for those who have very physically demanding jobs, who would still benefit from exercises that help counteract imbalances and work as 'pre-hab.'

Ceasing weight training should help your lower body shrink. For a while.

When you add muscle thru weight training, but don't take fat off at the same rate, YOU GET BIGGER. You feel bigger. Your jeans are tighter. You SWEAR you are doing the wrong thing routine wise. But in actuality your diet is not clean enough, you are not losing fat fast enough, or genetically you are just able to put on muscle much faster than you can lose fat. But that extra muscle you are adding will help you burn more calories in the long run...at rest and with activity...and in the long run, help you stay thinner. It just really sucks at first, especially if your diet isn't the best.. BUT I am a firm believer that cutting out weights is not the way to solve the problem!! If you have the genetics to put on muscle very easily GOOD FOR YOU. Many people don't have this advantage. All that means is that to look the way you want to look, your diet has to be that much cleaner than the average exerciser/dieter.

What I describe is what happened to me. After years of not weight training my legs are no bigger than they were before, when I lifted very heavy weights, daily. I stayed frustrated, the same way you are now. Very frustrating for me now that I have literally ceased working out FOR YEARS and my body looks pretty much the same as before when I was literally killing myself with exercise!! It's just a hell of a lot mushier and certainly not hard as a rock like it used to be! But in no way would I ever consider ceasing weight training to help me squeeze my thighs into a size 3. I have just learned thru this that diet is sooo important to ever looking the way I want to look...

Try your experiment. Odds are you will feel thinner and squeeze into those jeans. But don't let those results convince you that weight training just isn't for you.

Anyway, I just wanted to add that in there. ;-)

I have another suggestion for you as my hubby likes the steaks, butter, etc.

I just cook for myself such as we will grill fish, chicken and lean red meat. I will also have him grill some veggies or I will steam some. Typically don't have any simplex carbs such as rice or pasta or bread in the evening but if we do, I will make brown rice, etc and save it for my lunch during the week.

If he wants to add the butter, sauces, dressings etc. to his meal he can do so and then I am not subjected to the types of foods I would rather not eat.

Has been working well for us.

Then of course you can usually do what you need to for your other meals which are typically not shared with DH.

Good luck and you have received lots of good advice.

My DH also likes the butters and too much red meats. I too have prepared foods for myself. I always made sure there was a choice of both at the table. So my kids grew up with both choices available to them. Now that they are 19 and 21 years of age, I am pleased to say that they have followed my example.
