    The last 10

Congratulations on your loss! Losing weight is 90% diet and 10% exercise, IMO. I've found that eating small meals every 2.5 to 3 hours, watching carbs, sticking to lean protein, veggies and fruits has worked for me. I also agree that focusing on weight lifting and interval training is the...

    Totally "jonesing"....

RE: Totally I with ya'. I tried giving up gum when I read on this board that it makes you swallow more air. I also worry about how the sugar alcohols effect me. But I couldn't do it - I'm a gum junkie! Oh well, at least I was able to quit smoking!:-)

Advice for staying fit as we age

Amy - I'm 44, and over the last two years have managed to lose 50 pounds and gain significantly more lean muscle by eating clean and exercising. After age 30, lifting weights becomes much more important than cardio, IMO. But most important of all is what you put in your mouth. I was one of...

    Perimenopause anyone?!

Hi - I've been perimeno for about 4 years now and it's really kicked in the last year or so. I've seen my doc about it and he says it can last up to 10 years, depending on the person - oh joy. I think you're supposed to steer clear of too much soy because it can mess up your thyroid. I'm...

    need some advice

Hi - I don't know exactly what you mean by mini-stepper, but I have a Reebok step and I like it. Its very versatile and can even be used on an incline. It doesn't go as high as the high step, but I also have a Firm fanny lifter that I use when a high step is used in Cathe's videos. Julia

    size

I have a 33" bust and wear a size small. But in exercise wear I sometimes get a medium, it depends on the manufacturer. I would say a medium would be your best bet.

Cardio or weights? What's the best for getting lean?

Leela - I think you're right. Your approach makes a lot of sense. I'm not trying to be a bodybuilder or anything, just have the best body a 44 year-old peri-menopausal mother of three can have:P There seems to be a cult of heavy weight-lifting only believers, but these all or nothing...

Cardio or weights? What's the best for getting lean?

I know you need both, and I've been trying to up my cardio with the goal of lowering my BF% and hopefully shrink the stubborn belly fat. But I read on another forum that heavy lifting is the way to go for lowering body fat. Now I'm totally confused. I've always thought that to get rid of...

    Am I ready?

Hi - I'm 44 and also recently lost a lot of weight (54 lbs.:D ) I started out with Kathy Smith and went from there to The Firm. My first Cathe workout was MIS. The first time I tried it I thought it was really tough! Well actually I still think its really tough, lol, but I can get through...

    Fat-blasting diet????

South Beach is a great diet, and a very healthy way to eat. I'm not trying to start a debate on which way of eating is best:) , but I just want to clarify that Atkins also includes fruit after the first two weeks of induction. Atkins also promotes whole, healthy foods and lots of veggies. SB...

Which do you think is worse: sugar or caffeine?

RE: Thanks everyone! Sugar is absolutely worse than caffeine! Sugar causes overproduction of glucose which can be stored as fat. Caffeine in moderation is actually good for you. You really should cut sugar out completely.

Has anybody overcome compulsive or emotional eating?

Lori - I know a lot of people who have the same problem. I'm more of a closet eater. I tend to binge when I'm alone - as though if no one sees me eat it then it has no calories:P . I think journaling really helps. I've kept a food journal for over a year now and there have been many times...

    Favorite Cathe Moments

I have done Slow and Heavy several times now but I still crack up every time I do S&H Chest and Back and during the pec flies she says something like "you're still with us right? you didn't go make popcorn and are just watching are you?" I just love her spontaneous humor!:7

    Fat-blasting diet????

I lost 54 pounds on Atkins and have kept it off for over a year. You have to get through the first 48 hours of carb withdrawal before your energy returns. Also, you need to go through all the phases of the diet just exactly as the book describes. By the time you make it to maintenance the...

Give me some of your clean eating lunche menus!

Lunch for me today was tuna/salmon salad made with egg whites and sugar-free pickle relish and a little mayo, with a tossed salad. Breakfast was flaxmeal bread with a tablespoon of low fat cream cheese. I make the flaxmeal bread myself and add walnuts, whey protein powder, cinnamon...

    Nutritionist Visit

I agree with Candi that cutting out sugar may be helpful. I never had a weight problem before turning 40 and thought I was a pretty healthy eater. I always ate low fat, but put sugar in my coffee and ate potatoes or pasta with every meal. I went on Atkins and lost 50 lbs. Atkins may be...

    Anyone here over 40?

Wow! Its so great to see so many responses from over 40 ladies who work out. You all have given me so much inspiration. I'm so glad to know that I'm not alone in my quest to be the best that I can be. That's really my goal, to have the best body I'm capable of having at my age. Of course the...

    Anyone here over 40?

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone! Margaret, I too am eating more of a modified, clean eating type of diet now. I also eat lots of veggies and fruit, but haven't added grain (unless you count flax). I've lowered my fat - cut out red meat and cut way back on the cheese and I think its...

    Anyone here over 40?

So true Kathryn. I was still eating like I was 20 when I turned 43 and realized that I had gained 50 lbs.!:o I'm one of those people who never worked out or dieted and was never overweight. I admit I was a couch potato - didn't even enjoy gym class in high school! Now I realize all the...

    Anyone here over 40?

I already eat low carb, but with lots of fruits and veggies. I lost over 50 lbs. and have kept it off for about a year. I do believe in low carb eating.
