What do you use to deodorize your cat's litter box?

BAM

Cathlete
I use flushable litter but it doesn't always cover up the smell. Is there anything that you add to the litter that masks the odor that ISN'T perfumey? I know they have these perfume smelling powders that make your cat smell fragrant all day long.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks so much, Natasha. Do you layer it or just pour it in and mix it around? How much is needed? I'm sure it's a trial and error thing but it's nice to hear it from an expert! :D

Baking soda in the box but I use Lysol Neutra air in the room of the box, my office, or Febreze. Ventilation is important in my house too.

I usually mix it around. How much is needed depends on how many cats share the litter box. I can easily use 1/2 box every week or so, but you have to use your own judgment. Yup, trial/error works best. Also another tip, WASH THE LITTER BOX every 2 weeks. I mean empty out all the litter and wash that sucker in hot water and cleansers. Let soak for up to 1-2 hours. This will remove any lingering odors of urine and feces.

What Jen (JT) said is also a good idea. I have an automatic Glade unit in the room where my box is kept.

Good luck!

Thank you ladies! It's off to the store to buy a fresh box of baking soda. My nose is going to be very happy! :D

Thanks again!

I second the baking soda. I buy arm/hammer brand scooping kitty litter. I scoop frequently and once a week clean out the entire box and wash it with dawn, then fill with fresh litter. She loves it, comes over and purrs a lot when I'm cleaning out the box, so I know I'm doing the right thing;)

RapidBreath, how cute that she says thank you the way she does when you've cleaned her box. :) I didn't yet get the baking soda but I will. Hmmmm, will my kitty say thank you the way yours does? If not, can I send her to your cat to give mine a lesson in manners? :D

I'm another Baking Soda user. I bought the eco-bag at Sam's club for $5 and I throw in a cup of soda every 2-3 days. It's also nice buying the larger size bc I can use it to clean clothing- it whitens whites and removes stains without having to use bleach and harsh cleaners. I'll also be adding it to my diaper pail ever 2 days to prevent diaper-stank!

FYI: for $5, I get a 13.5 POUND BAG!!! All you need to do is save an old scoop from your laundry soap or softener and throw it in the bag for easier dispensing. It's a lot cheaper to buy the bulk bag and you'll get excellent use from it. We have 5 cats (a combined household from marriage) and unless you see our cats, you can't tell we have them. I'm anal about smells and germs and Baking Soda is a life saver and it's all natural and safe on neutered males (some of the scented liters cause kidney and liver problems as the male cats age).

Arm & Hammer makes a baking soda based cat litter deodorizer that I think adds a bit more "oomph" to baking soda alone but not by adding a heavy perfumey scent. We have 4 cats and 3 litter boxes and unless someone has JUST used it (much like humans ) we've been told there's no animal odor in our house. Highly recommend it.

Mrsprincess07, that is a great deal! I'm glad you found something that's easy on your nose AND your pocketbook. :D

Cataddict, thanks for sharing about that product. I'm wondering if it's the same one that I've seen in the stores but the one I saw did have a heavy scent. I will have to give it another sniff test again since you're getting such good results with it.

I did throw some baking soda in her box and it seems to be working but I will be adjusting the amount to find what works best.

Thanks again ladies!!!

After years of scooping poop and holding my nose, I talked my cat (Monkey)into doing her busness outside....it makes us both happier and has greatly improved my dog's breath ....she (Mertie) used to like to help me keep the liter box empty

ROTFLMAO! Although I'm sure that's not how you felt with your dog helping you the way she did. I'm glad you found a solution that works for all involved. Thanks for sharing that. You made my day!

To solve the dog issue....My husband installed a doggie door (small) and left the door off. So there is a small square hole in the door. Now the cats run and jump through the hole to enter the room where the litter pan is. Now the dog can not help herself. And, it looks nice! I also, use Baking Soda!!!!
