Kettlebell question

I've decided to give kettlebells a try, I'm just not sure what weight to start with? What did everyone else start with and whats a good video to start with? I'm thinking ordering Art of Strength Providence any advice? Thx in advance for the help!

I bought a 15# bell at Target. It comes with an instructional vid on how to do the basic exercises. They also sell 2 volumes of the Iron Core work outs there lead by the same instructor who's on the instructional vid. They are an inexpensive (I paid $15 per vid) way to find out if you like kb's before spending the money on an AOS vid which runs $50 a pop.

JMO though. :)

Thanks! I've been surfing around today and I saw those advertised at Target. I think I may run down tomorrow and pick one up. After listening to all the talk about kettlebells I can't hold out anymore , I must try them!!

You won't regret it. KBs are fun and a nice change of pace. I still do other weight routines but try to get 1 or 2 KB sessions in a week. Have fun!!

I just started with kbs a couple of weeks ago. I have the AOS dvds but have been using the Iron Core dvds to work up to AOS.

I also had a limited selection of kbs because I live outside the US - could only find 15 and 25lbs. I kept reading that you move up in weight quickly, so I got the 25lb and it's quite heavy. It's a challenge for me to do a getup on my weaker left side. Also, of course, the heavier weight wears me out faster, so I'm taking longer breaks (and doing quite a bit of huffing and puffing :)

I think 20 would have been the perfect weight for me to start with, so maybe if you go to the store, pick up a couple and see how they feel to you. You can always resell the ones you outgrow (which isn't really an option for me).

Lastly - kbs are super fun and I wish I had found out about them years ago!

You just started, and you're doing TGU's with 25#!
That's impressive !
(I started with NO weights, and MANY people are starting these with little or no weight to get the move down).

Oh, trust me, it's not easy. I would def have picked something lighter to do get-ups. I do think it is good for cleans, presses, snatches, etc and prob better than if I had picked the 15.

I also think the heavier weight helped me focus on form and respect the bell. I learned really fast not to let that thing nail my forearm. Ouchie.

I started KB about three weeks ago and I really enjoy it. When my dvds came in, Lauren Brooks and Providence, I could only find a 4 pound KB in Walmart. I found it challening with Brooks but not really with Providence.

KBs came in at my fitness store and the fella suggest someone who is fit should start with 18 kg. I consider myself fit but I couldn't pick this thing up. I could pick up the 12kg but I couldn't "clean" it let alone push it above my head. So I purchased the 8kg. I find it challenging with Providence and I'm certain it will be challenging with Brooks as that's more of an anarobic workout.

I think it all depends with how heavy a weight you presently work with. I don't lift heavy so I needed something lighter.

Most sources I've read suggest you start with an 8kg (which is about 18 pounds, so wondering if he got confused), and for really fit women to start with the 12 kg. So the 8kg is exactly where you should be starting at. I have an 8kg I use for most everything, but only use my 12kg for stuff like plie squats, I suppose I could swing the 12kg too.

I went to Target today and got a 10 pound kettlebell with the instructional dvd. I wanted a 15# too but they didn't have any bells without the dvd, guess I'll go to Dick's and buy that one. I also ordered the Art of Strength Providence, I can't wait to get started it looks like a really good workout!

Thank you for that. I was feeling like a total wimp. I did make sure the guy and I were talking in kgs. Maybe he indeed mixed up the weights.
