Someone give me a substitute for mustard

I love mustard.......nay, I adore it! :p But it's killing my stomach. I can't eat it anymore without having acids rolling around in there & making me quite queasy for hours on end. Last time I ate it I had to do my leg w/o & I came frightenly close to puking at the gym--for the wrong reasons, frankly I think it's A-OK to puke at the gym for the right reasons. ;)

Is there anything as tasty that won't make me feel like hurling? Please help!

Have you ever tried preserves on a sandwich? I know it sounds weird, but things like whole cranberry sauce or cranberry orange preserves are great on ham, chicken, or turkey. The same with fig jam. Fig jam is awesome on a gouda or fontina cheese sandwich. Another thing you might try is mixing a little mustard in mayo or yogurt to try and cut the acidity.

I was gonna pop on here and suggest hummus but I see someone beat me to it! ;)

I eat it on my turkey sandwiches all the time. YUMMY! :)

Is hummus spicy? I really need spicy--I like my food w/a kick. Believe it or not, I've never had hummus b/c I'm not a huge fan of beans.

More specifics please! :)

Depends on the kind. There is one from Tribe called 5 spice, I think? There's also garlic, roasted red pepper, etc. I LOVE hummus and use it on my sandwiches too.

I also like the Laughing Cow light cheese wedges instead of mayo (I hate mayo!) and they have a garlic herb flavored one also. HTH!

I make my own and use chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (you can find it in the Mexican food isle) - IT IS AWESOME!!! I am the only one that will touch it because it gives everyone else runny noses. It lasts me a really long time, too, and garbanzo beans aren't very beany so you may like it! :)

Mmmmmmmm this all sounds very yummy! OK then, I will peruse my gourmet store's selection of spicy hummus.

Bearing in mind now, the reason I'm ditching mustard is b/c it gives me tummy aches. Hopefully something made of beans & spice won't do the same!

I know we have been at odds in the past but I could not help but chime in on this one.

I have a question - in what way do you use the mustard?? Sandwich, salad etc.

Here is what I have been hooked on - Marzetti's Baja Ranch Dressing. I use it on sandwiches, grilled veggies (grilled apsaragus especially!), my burgers. Unfortunately they don't make a low fat or fat free but you don't need much.

Hope this helps.

I LOVE fig jam and never thought of using it like this!!! I have a jar in the fridge right now, so I must go get some gouda cheese this weekend and give it a try. Thanks for posting this!!!

if you get hummus that is not spicy enough, you can always add a dash of cayenne pepper to it. i love to add this spice to things to get that spicy heat i am looking for.

I LOVE it! It's also good if you have left over roast pork and you want to make a sandwich with it -- or prosciutto -- YUM!!

I'm making pork chops tonight--I will try it with them!! Wow, I feel like I've been exposed to a whole new world...LOL! Thank you so much!

Mustard gives me a terrrible sore throat but I've found I can eat honey mustard and it doesn't bother me because it's not as strong.

I've been thinking about this.

If the problem is with prepared mustard, it might be the vinegar that is the problem (white vinegar is pretty harsh). If so, you could add mustard powder to something like mashed avocado. Maybe toy with some other spices as well (turmeric, paprika...which are in the bottle of prepared mustard I just looked at).

If it's the mustard itself that is the problem (ie: the mustard oil is an irritant), I would think that some of the other options mentioned using hot peppers could be equally as problematic.

LIFE WITHOUT MUSTARD??? Laura, have you tried a different kind of mustard? Maybe a milder one? Interesting that mustard bothers you. I have a delicate stomach and can't drink orange juice or eat fried foods, but mustard never bothered me. So sorry to hear it :(
