My first herb garden

This is the first year I have finally planted a herb garden. Once I kept the puppies out of it, it grew wonderfully! A few weeks ago I snipped it all off & dried them. This morning I bagged it all up. How easy this was!! The cost of one plant was less than a bottle in the store & I got so much more. Maybe next year I'll plant more variety. This year was just, Thyme, basil, rosemary, chives and parsley. I did manage to bring a little piece of a few of them inside but I don't think they're doing well. Bought a new basil plant for indoors - love the smell!!

We've (my husband -he's the gardener) have grown herbs the past couple years. It is a lot of fun. One year we did chocolate mint, mmmmmm smelled so good. If you plant mint in the future, put it in a container, if you put it in the ground it'll spread like crazy. Lemon thyme is nice, too. We also did a pizza garden one year. We got a BIG terra cotta pot, put tomatoes and peppers in the middle, and italian herbs around the outside. Was kinda pretty, too. Also pretty is purple basil.

Tami, that's wonderful! I only did basil this year, but next year want to do cilantro as well, and rosemary.

If you plant mint in the future, put it in a container, if you put it in the ground it'll spread like crazy.

LOL! I learned this the hard way. I planted not one, but THREE, mint plants in my first flower bed. Every time I weed, I have to thin out the mint. It smells great...but it's so invasive!

It is a great feeling!! We did a garden for the first time in years also & how much better the produce taste!!! Loved it! Can't wait to do it again next year.

LOL! I learned this the hard way. I planted not one, but THREE, mint plants in my first flower bed. Every time I weed, I have to thin out the mint. It smells great...but it's so invasive!

But mint is easy to pull out (shallow roots).
*I* made the mistake of planting garlic chives. Thought they'd be like regular chives with a garlicky taste. And since it was a plant place I bought it from, I didn't think anything about it. Now, several years later, this invasive plant is everywhere! I HATE IT!!

I do have a lovely sage plant that is a perrenial. I actually don't use it that much for cooking, but I think it's pretty! Last year, I was able to harvest some fresh sage for making stuffing (un'stuffed' vegan type of course) even after it had snowed!

Rosemary will also get really big. It does make a lovely (and fragrant) bush, but you'll need the room for it. Or you can just cut it back periodically. I love it when the kids bump into it by accident and the air (and they) smell like rosemary.

DH has an herb garden every year, with basil, thyme, rosemary, parsley, italian parsley, etc. The neighbors often admire it, and we always tell them to come on by and snip some for themselves!

i had an herb garden when i lived in georgia....i LOVED it!! the rosemary was incredible....i also had russian sage which got so big, but i love the way that looks with the purple flowers! the oregano was nice the way it grew. i also had regular sage basil and italian parsley.....i miss my herb garden...

You can't do better than that. You save money, you know where it comes from, hopefully it is organic (you don't need pesticides on herbs at all). Perhaps next year you can start a vegie garden. Just a few things to get you started.

If you love growing your own herbs, then you'll love a vegie garden also.

I've had a garden in my life for many many years, and I love it every year.

Kathryn...I planted those too...same flower bed.

I'm my own worst gardening enemy!
