what about bikini waxing?

I've been considering a bikini wax for an upcoming trip to the "redneck Riviera." Anyone have any advice or experiences you'd like to share? Don't think I'm ready for the brazilian approach!

Ok what the hell is the redneck Riviera?

I have heard that it is VERY painful when being done but once it's done the feeling is FABULOUS!

Oh man, don't even go there with the brazilian! I know people that got thrown off the old Firm Forum because of their thread about brazilians. I'm going to send them here to stir up a little fun conversation!

I take some Advil about an hour before going. It's not that bad - the first time is the worst but it gets better.

I love the not having to shave thing and as it grows back in, the hairs aren't as dense so if you have to shave, fewer hairs = fewer bumps. That is only because hairs grow in cycles, not because waxing causes hairs to not come back at all (like some people think).

I used to have bikini waxing a few years ago and loved the way it looked afterwards...very clean, if that sounds right. The only thing I didn't like was having to wait in between waxings. No shaving allowed, or so my esthetician used to tell me!

It can be a little costly to keep up. The salon that I used to go to would give every 5th or 6th session for free, provided that you kept up with coming every three weeks.

Angela- it really isn't that bad! The first time is a little more painful but just make sure the hair is long enough (very important or it won't pull out). Also remember this may be your first time but they do this for a living. I've had Brazilians too and after the embarrassment its great when your active in your bathing suit w/kids, swimming, etc.

Good luck!

Thanks, ladies... still undecided. I don't like the idea of having growth in between times. I can probably deal with the pain.

The "redneck Riviera" is the gulf area... Mobile, Biloxi, Pensacola. Primo vacation spot for those of us in the southern central states.

It's not that bad. It's a great idea to take some pain killers before you go. It lasts several weeks. I do it once a year in the summer time before a trip where I think I might have to wear a bathing suit. The problem for me is that the woman who does it is such a perfectionist, she insists upon going after any left over hairs with a tweezer! The tweezer hurts much worse than the waxing. Still, I don't stop her....

I hate and fear the bikini wax, yet I do it because it's so convenient. My only advice to you is if you are going to get one, do it several days in advance. The first time I got a wax, I was supposed to go to the beach the next day - my skin is very fair and sensitive, and I had bright red dots everywhere (the pores where the hairs had been mercilessly ripped out). It takes about 2-3 for my skin to look "normal".

Good luck.

I agree with everyone else - it hurts but not too much (underarms, on the other hand, are a whole different level of pain). Don't do it the week right before your period, when you're hypersensitive to pain. Pop those Advil before you go. And I use Bikini Zone cream after a waxing - it cuts down on any soreness and redness and prevents ingrown hairs. I found it in the drugstore with "feminine products", tee hee.

Brazilians are painful. I've had one and it was the single most painful experience I've voluntarily undergone. I loved the results but it HURT. A LOT. And my soreness and redness continued for almost 24 hours afterward.

The pain get less or maybe I can tolerate it more after several years LOL. But in any case motrin ahead of time helps.
Now the brazilian always hurts, but the results are worth it. If I can't get there every 3 weeks I just use tweezers to clean up the strays until I can get in for an appointment.

Because hair grow in cycles as mentioned above, there is the appearance of less growth between waxings as compared to shaving which cuts everything off at the same length.

Waxes can be good and bad. It definately hurts- sometimes if you get a good waxer, it's not so bad...however, a bad wax can kill! Every once in awhile I'll get a bad wax and get a lot of ingrowns. If you use Tendskin or a similar product before and after, it helps. It starts growing back in 2-3 weeks which stinks.

So it's really just up to you. It's painful but over in a few minutes- and I wouldn't start with a brazilian wax!!

good luck!

I love Pensacola! I'm so jealous!

I also love waxing:) I think the reason it hurts less each time after is that there is a lot less hair to rip out the more you do it. I went to a pro once and now do it at home with cold wax strips. I think shaving is much more painful.

Before you laugh me off of this thread hear me out. LOL!
I once saw an interview with Jenna Jameson, the porn star, and apparently one of the most asked questions of her is how to keep the red bumps from appearing after shaving. I don't sit around watching porn but as most of you may know these "actresses" and "actors" are completely shaved. Well her suggestion was to put Neosporin on the area and she claims that does the trick for her. Nowadays alot of men are "cleaning up", to put it sensitively, certain areas and I believe it just looks better anyway to have less hair on a well-toned body, whether female or male. I have used the Neosporin to a certain degree and it does work.
So, there ya go! LOL! Take it or leave it. I promise not to butt into this thread again ladies. :)

You go Trevor!

I am so glad you posted in response to this. I would love a man's TRUE feelings on it--do you like it or prefer the "natural" look.

And I have also heard that Neosporin helps, not just the bikini area but for those with sensitive skin on their legs, too.

COME BACK TREV, TELL US WHAT YOU LIKE!

and a little porn never hurt anyone! LOL

RE: You go Trevor!

Maybe I should save my response for the MUM site! LOL! I am having enough trouble in here. I guess some will add "pig" to "rude" on my list of things they think about me!! LOL!
I will state that it's my experience talking to other guys that most, or at least ALOT, of guys love women who are completely smooth. It's very VERY sexy. So that's my answer in a nutshell!
I miss talking with you Deb!

RE: You go Trevor!

Yeah, I thought about asking the guys on an almost all male fitness forum I frequent, but I was afraid everyone would have the same opinion you just expressed. Thanks for giving us a male point of view, Trev.

RE: You go Trevor!

Well you would have to figure that the most painful approach is the one that is well-liked. :) In the end you gotta do what's comfortable for you anyway...:)
