Running

I have recently started running, and I think I have fallen in love. But I have noticed that my feet roll outward when I run. I was wondering if any other runner's do this and what kind of shoes would you reccomend???

I have 2 brands that I like - Asics and Brooks. I underpronate when I run as well but you may have other issues as well so my advice if you are going to run frequently would be to go to a runner's store or a fitness store (not Footlocker, etc.) and have some evaluate your step when you run and give you some good shoe recommendations.

That's what I finally did and I have very few problems with my feet now.

I overpronate too. I love Asics Gel Nimbus. They provide just enough support and cushion but everyone is different I reccomend going to a running store to try them. Happy running!

I read your message wrong. I was thinking you said you land on the outside of your feet and then roll inward (which is underpronate like I do). That's what I get for reading things to quickly!!!

Didn't mean to confuse you!!

Check out the Runners World magazine website -runnersworld.com -they explain pronation and have a shoe guide to help you. BUT I would strongly recommend like others that you go to a running store to have someone assess you.

Actually, the description still sounds far more like underpronating than overpronating (feet roll in excessively during foot strike follow through). I know that overpronation is corrected by a stability shoe, and in cases of very large runners, by a motion control shoe, but do they make shoes for underpronation? I recommend going to runnersworld.com and trawl through looking for the section they have on feet/pronation/shoe fitting, etc. They have more info there that can help you.

This pronation/foot rolling may or may not be a problem for you, it's hard to tell. It may be that you will start to get pains or an injury and that this will reveal itself as you increase mileage and number of days running per week. But it is also possible that this is your natural running gait and that it may lead to no problems at all. I have to admit though, that this does not sound like the neutral gait that the "best" runners have and which we all learn to be envious of, so I would get it checked out by a running specialist/orthotics specialist as you need someone to analyze your gait and determine if in some way your hips and legs are currently over-compensating for your foot rolling and that this could be detrimental along the road.

I wonder if a stability shoe would be used for UNDERpronation as well as OVER? Hmmm...might have to look that up!
I am an overpronator and wear Mizunos. I love them! It's like they were designed especially for me. But I absolutely agree with everyone else, go to a running store and have your gait analyzed. Everyone is so different, a personalized match is the only way to go!
Watch out though! Running is addictive! :D Since beginning in April, I've bought 4 pairs of shoes, 8 pairs of socks, a fuel belt, run in 2 races, signed up for 4 more and actually had the insane thought of signing up for a marathon!:eek::eek:

Asics for me!

I vote for asics too. I have a slight pronation too, and I love the Asics cumulus for good cushioning, but for races, my favorite by far is Asics DS trainer! So light! I actually own 4 pairs of different styles of asics and switch them out depending on what kind of run I'm doing. You can go to most running stores and have the salesperson set you up on a treadmill and watch you run and they can recommend the best shoe for you. It's really neat! I love what ASICS stands for too - It stands for the Latin phrase Anima Sono in Corpo Sono (Sound Mind, Sound Body).

I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but I live in south Alabama. The only place people run to around here is the buffet. I would be in serious shock if we had a "running store" within a 100 mile radius....I will check out runnersworld.com though...

I have noticed my right knee aches a little after I run so I want to keep myself safe and prevent an injury if there is a problem ...

You could google running stores in Alabama and see what you come up with. There could be one near you (amongst all the buffets :))

I would highly recommend that you try to get some advice from a running store on what type of shoe you need to wear. The other advantage is you can try on a bunch in the store and see what brand feels the best to you. The general rule of thumb is if you have high arches you wear a cushioning shoe, if you have medium arches you wear a stability shoe and if you have flat feet you would wear a motion control shoe. But those are just rules of thumb. I have high arches but tend to do best in stability shoes. There are lots of other things to take into consideration besides your arch type. I've always worn Sauconys...they fit my feet really well.

If you cannot get to a running store, try ordering a few different shoes from Zappos. The shipping is free both ways, and you can wear them around the house to see how they feel, and keep the ones you like and return all the rest.

Anyhow...good luck and welcome to the world of running :)

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!! That's so true! Where do you live? I lived in Pensacola for 8 years and thought I was the only one who noticed the lack of running stores :D

Look what I found! Runner's World has a list of running stores by state. Here's the one for Alabama. There STILL might not be a good one close to you, but at least it looks like there are stores somewhere in Alabama!

I like www.roadrunnersports.com's shoe dog - pretty reliable shoe finding tool. I always choose my shoe there, then buy them at Zappos, 'cause Roadrunner's shipping is slooooooooowwwwwwwww. Really. Really. Slow.

We live in Enterprise (Ft Rucker)...what I REALLY miss is Trader Joes. The only thing we have here is Walmart and overpriced health food stores....

My right knee used to hurt too when I first got into running. What worked for me was getting a patellar strap. It's a little tube woven into fabric that you velcro just below your right knee cap, and it helps your knee track in the right direction. Sometimes with pronation your knee will move the wrong direction when you run, so try that. You can get them at walmart or walgreens for under $10. They are a knee saver, trust me. Also, make sure if you have access to a gym that you do the leg extension machine. It really helps work all the muscles surrounding the knee so it stays in place well. If you don't have access to a gym you can do standing leg extensions by standing straight up and lifting one knee and extending it straight out and back in around 15 times and try to do 3 sets on each leg. Straight leg lifts are good too. And of course squats are probably the best leg and knee exercise you can do to keep the whole lower body responding well to your running.
