Questions about Aspartame and CLA

Hi all. I first would just like to say that I'm fairly new
to Cathe, having been doing her workouts for about 3 months now.
Like a few others I've seen here, I got hooked on her workouts
through FitTV. I knew about her for a long time, having been a
subscriber to the Collage Video guide for years, but I was always
worried I wouldn't be up to doing her workouts since they seemed
to always describe them as "super advanced" and "ultra tough".
Turns out I guess I was in better shape than I was giving myself
credit for, as I tried out her workouts (bless you, FitTV!) and
found they were just what I needed. Sure, they're tough. But,
it's a GOOD kind of tough. I think I've made more progress in
my fitness level in the past 3 months than I have in the past
3 years. I can't wait for the Hardcore series!

OK, now on to my questions: I've read in various places, including
here, that Asparatame isn't good for you. But I've never heard
anything specifically saying HOW it isn't good for you. What
does it do that makes it bad for your health? I'm a little
concerned about this, being that I drink one or two diet sodas
a day, and I usually put Equal in my coffee as well. (And I
thought I was making a good choice by avoiding that saccharine
containing Sweet & Low.) If Equal/Aspartame should be avoided,
how about Splenda? Is that a safe sugar substitute?

Also, I've heard that the supplement CLA is supposedly good for
promoting body fat loss and stimulating lean muscle development.
Has anyone here tried CLA? Does it work?
