Hey EC, re: Mama Deb's FIL

TarHeelMom

Cathlete
Hey folks, just wanted to alert you all that Mama Deb's (DebbieH) father-in-law took a nasty fall on Friday night and broke his hip, so he had hip replacement surgery today. The surgery was a success and he is doing just fine. Deb says that if all goes well he should be moved to a rehab facility in just a few days. All great news! Still, this has been a scary day for Debbie and her husband Dave, and of course for Dave's dad and his mom. And the surgery and recovery are quite an ordeal for an elderly person.

Debbie and Dave live nearby, and they are very close to Dave's parents and take very good care of them. (I love and admire the fact that for a long time now Debbie and Dave have had an every-Saturday-night movie outing with them. Not everyone would want to spend every Saturday night with their in-laws! ;-)) You all know the kind of warm and thoughtful person Debbie is -- well, so is Dave. No question that they'll be running back and forth like crazy to help out ALL the time throughout Dave's dad's rehab and recovery process.

Debbie's done so much for our community over the years, and I knew that our Educated Crowd would want to add Debbie, Dave, Dave's dad and his mom to our personal lists for prayers and good vibes for strength and healing. :)

Thanks everybody!!

Thanks for the info Kathy.

{ { {HUGS} } } to Mama Deb and Dave with special prayers for Dave's Dad and Mom.

Awwww Kathy, you lil' stinker! What a beautiful post! Thank you and everyone for your special thoughts, HUGS & prayers. They mean so much. We were at the hospital til 10:00 last nite and he appears to be doing okay...very sedated and sleeping lots which is good. They plan to get him up very early this morning to sit in a chair. I just pray he isn't in excrutiating pain when moved. My FIL is a gem of a guy and everyone loves him...he is quite the joker. I'm sure in no time, he'll be joking with the nurses. We are headed that way soon so once again, thank you ALL for your thoughful words. I will pass them & all your hugs along to both my in-laws today. Big HUGS to you all!

Kathy, thanks for the heads up.

DebbieH, your FIL and the rest of your family will be in my prayers. Best wishes for a rapid recovery.

Hey Deb!!

Deb, I'm so glad the news is still all good!!!!

I'm sure when your FIL gets up and around at first that he'll be in some pain, but try not to let that discourage you, Dave, your MIL OR him because it's so normal and will improve so much if he keeps moving. I say this from experience because my MIL had hip replacement surgery when she was 80 and I remember her recovery very clearly. Getting up and moving the joint ASAP seems to be the key, so I will cross my fingers and pray that your FIL will stick with it. Knowing how plucky he is, I'm sure he will!

I'll bet he's telling jokes to the nurses by the end of the day today too, Deb. Here's an "older fella" joke to share with him that he can "adapt" and totally claim as his own if he likes it. :) I was told this one by my friend Harriet's 87-year-old Uncle Irving, who's about 5 feet tall (no joke), kinda stooped, completely twinkly-eyed, and works (!!) as a kind of candy striper-ish volunteer at a nearby hospital. Uncle Irving said to me "You know, Miss Kathy, working as a volunteer is kinda risky because I tend to get attached to patients when I don't know how they're gonna do. I was helping out a guy just last week, for example, and this week he suddenly took a turn for the nurse."

Yuck yuck. ;-) Can't you just hear the drummer answering: Ba DUM bum.

Sending hugs, positive healing vibes and prayers right up your way, GF! XOXOXOXOX

RE: Praying

Thank you all! You are all so nice! My FIL is doing fantastic! They got him up yesterday and had him "walk" just about 2-3 steps, then pivot around to sit in a chair for a couple hours. He did GREAT! I honestly was amazed how lil' pain he was in or like my SIL said, it's his WW2 machoism coming out! Ha! He did amazing and joked with the PT aids the whole time. Kath, thanks for the joke...I will def pass it onto him. Ha! They plan to have him walk the hall to the PT room today where they will do lying down exercises. He has never complained one time thur this whole ordeal and at 84 years old, I think that's simply amazing. Thanks for all your kind words, thoughts and prayers! They mean the world!

RE: Praying

Debbie,

Just wanted to say your FIL will be in my thoughts and prayers as well. It sounds like he's doing wonderfully! He's TOUGH!! Good for him. My grandmother had double knee replacement surgery and just wouldn't do her therapy. The result was not good. :-(

He sounds determined. Keep us posted.

Dallas and Judy!

Thank you both!! Dallas, he actually is looking forward to the rehab because he says he wants to make his legs stonger so this doesn't happen again. For the past year, we have been "waiting" for him to have this happen as he has fallen probably a dozen times due to his legs being so very weak...he would just shuffle and he also has some neuropathy. (Sp.?) It was bound to catch up with him. Sooo, in the long run, he may be even stronger then before once he completes rehab. :7 Thanks again EVERYONE!
