Confusion about base metabolic rate & calorie needs..

Let's say a person's Base Metabolic Rate is 1600 calories a day .. they burn 500 calories daily through exercise, and want to maintain their weight .. does that mean that they need to eat the sum of their BMR plus the calories burned to maintain their current weight? (in this case .. 2,100 calories a day?)

TIA!

RE: Confusion about base metabolic rate & calorie needs...

You have to also take into account the average amount of calories a day that you need to do your everyday stuff, such as work, walk to & from your car, vacuum, etc. BMR just gives you the amount you would require for BASIC bodily functions such as breathing, maintaining your body temp, heart beats, etc.

In additon to what Smoogy said, you need to count in the number of calories required to digest and burn the food you eat. It takes more calories to burn protein but I always use an underestimate average of 5% of caloric intake is used to utilize food calories (this is a slight underestimate but I prefer to underestimate than over estimate.

The thermic effect of protein is about 30% and fat is 3% of it's calories...the thermic effect of carbs varies depending o the carb (apple much higher than pineapple, strawberries and spinach much higher than cookies).
