ZeroTolerance (Lisa)

Hi there,
I was kind of hoping we'd converse via email as I'm quite a private person when discussing things but if you feel uncomfortable I can talk either in PMs or on the forum.

The only thing is the breeder told me to strictly feed Greta (GSD) Eukenuba but Greta was getting very thin and her fur looked like sh*t basically. I switched to Nutro and she got a little "meatier" but still thin (high metabolism most likely from being so active) and her fur has gotten so much better but I still feel Nutro is not really that great for her. Nutro seemed to be great for my pitbull mix though. Breeder also told me not to give Greta any vitamins or oils due to plenty of nutrients in Eukenuba. Whilst Eukenuba is good for other dogs (my other GSD didn't have any problems on this dog food) it sucked for Greta. I'm just a little confused though. Also, is Foster and Smith a good place to order vitamins and oils from?

I haven't been online very much lately due to the kids, working, exams, working out, etc. I haven't posted in a while because I haven't been in a chatty mood. Some people would find that hard to believe. LOL

Thank you for posting the link again. I appreciate it. TTYS!

Lisa :)

Hi Lisa,

I hope you don't mind if I butt in here. I have two GSDs and have gone down a similar road searching for a food that my male could tolerate and would actually eat. I am currently feeding both of my dogs Eagle Pack Holistic Select (there are several "flavors" in this line that I rotate through every few bags or so just to mix it up). I settled on this brand because of the ingredients and the availability in a store near me. I also do raw, but I just haven't been able to get in a consistent routine with this, so the kibble is my backup. I do not add any supplements, although my dogs do like a little yogurt or cottage cheese mixed in.

I am including a link to a list of dog food companies that use human grade ingredients (http://www.leerburg.com/all-natural kibble.htm). Hopefully you can find a food that works for both you and your dogs!

Good luck!
Janine

Hi Lisa,

I understand the privacy issue, it's just that I have gotten a few emails from some forum users lately asking me something and when I responded , I received some pretty nasty attacks to my private email address, so I am a little hesitant to email from that address, nothing against you by any means. I am just a little cautious now.

I have a German shepherd mix and was feeding him Nature's Variety for a while, he did exceptionally well on it. I rotated the kibble and the raw frozen food they have.

Nature's Variety www.naturesvariety.com is on the recommended food list of the Whole Dog Journal.

I personally don't like Eukanuba, Iams or most readily available commercial dog foods, based on what I have read about the ingredients in their pet food (however, this is only my personal opinion and choice, it doesn't mean that is the only good and valid one).
I do agree with the breeder that it is not a good idea to just add oil or vitamins to commercial dog food, you could throw off the nutrient balance and actually do more harm than good. You may want to check out Dr. Pitcairns book The Complete Guide of Natural Health for Cats and Dogs, he has a few suggestions what to add to add nutrition to the kibble.

I haven't ordered from Foster and Smith, they usually don't have what I look for, I order through www.kvvet.com, they have a huge variety and pretty good prices.

I hope you'll find a food that will work for Greta.

Take care,

Carola
