Your opinion on good fitness magazines

Hi all,
I'm wondering what fitness magazines you would recommend. And what features they have that you especially like. Lora

Hi Lora!

I get Shape and also Fitness. I like to read the Success stories and also tear out exercises just for variety. One of them(I forget which one) always targets one mucle group each issue and gives 3 exercises for that muscle. They both have recipes (lowfat versions). Good Luck! You might want to pick one up at the market before subscribing to it.

WS&F

Women's Sports and Fitness gets my vote, along with Cooking Light (which is a cooking mag but very much focused toward people who work out it seems). Fitness is pretty good, Shape is the least helpful of the bunch (but I still read it, of course, what can I say, if I'm not exercising I want to be reading about exercisng!) -susan p

I Like Fitness

I have had both Shape and Fitness in the past and I prefer Fitness. I think it contains more information.

My picks are.....

Shape, Fitness, Men's Fitness, and my favorite - Men's Health!

Men's Health has good fitness articles plus good articles on all kinds of other stuff. Check it out, chicks! Men's Fitness and Men's Health have good weight lifting articles...good for us hard-core Cathe PS addicts

You go, girls!

Fitness, Fit, and a question...

I tend to read Fitness and Fit the most. I also read Shape on occasion, but don't like it as much; not quite sure why. My favorite thing in any fitness magazine is the success stories. I also like to check out the workouts they show, and the recipes. Both Fit and Fitness have a bit of a "beauty" slant to them, but I don't mind a little bit of beauty advice. I really love the sense of humor in Fit, though. I've also read a couple of issues of Oxygen, but it's too supplement-focused for me; it's more of a competitive bodybuilder type of magazine.

Here's my question: Have any of you checked out Muscle & Fitness Hers yet? What do you think of it? Is it just like Oxygen or does it really bridge the gap between Fit/Fitness/Shape and Oxygen? I haven't been able to find it yet... maybe they'd have it at Border's... Thanks!

Lynne

Muscle & Fitness Hers

I bought my copy at the grocery store (King Soopers). I imagine GNC might also carry it. The first issue looks pretty good. There are good serious workout suggestions, with varying levels of intensity for us real gals. I particularly liked the food article which was written by the author of Power Eating. It is a strength gain diet but without the crazy egg white/Irish oatmeal/no carbs mentality.

I am not renewing my subscription to Oxygen because it is just too focused on looking good for competition. In Muscle & Fitness Hers, there are a few articles on fitness competitions, but at least they are introduced as being a kind of special feature, rather than assuming that everyone out there is willing to get breast implants and take massive amounts of caffeine and edphedra for that ultimate goal of 8% body fat. The one problem I have is that the fitness fashion piece had models with obvious breast implants. I'm just getting sick of all the fake boobies--I think the women look unbalanced.

I like the Men's Health suggestion. I have a friend who subscribes to that, and it looked pretty good.

My top pick!

Although I don't suppose it's really considered a 'fitness' (working out specific) mag, I absolutely adore Prevention. It's the only magazine I have consistently read from cover to cover the day it comes in the mail. Along with general health and well being, there are articles on exercising, diet, new medical breakthroughs, and even sections covering kids, pets, and aging parents. Give it a try!

That kind of magazine not for me.

I'm going to see if these are on line. Suppose they are. Lora

Shape- my favorit...

I guess I'm a little different than most who have answered. I really get more nutrition and fitness advice from Shape than the others. I do like Fitness also. I didn't used to like Fitness because it had things not associated with fitness. But it seems to have changed a little. I really like it now. Guess Shape is my favorite because it was because of an article in it that gave me the info I needed to loose 25Lbs. Both magazines give excellent nutrition advice. They never give into fad diets. They stick to their guns about healthful eating, and never recommend a low calorie diet. Happy reading!Susan

Good For You Susan!!

25 pound weight loss!! I also like Shape Magazine. When it comes down to fitness, most any magazine on fitness will draw my attention. What article inspired you to lose your weight? I like good nutritional & healthy advice.

reading about exercising when not exercising

I am with you on the reading about exercising when not exercising thing.

I always buy Shape too but find that I like Fit, Fitness and Women's Sports and Fitness the most. I also liked Muscle and Fitness Hers and usually buy Muscle and Fitness too. I also like Oxygen but definitely could live without all the ads for supplements and Hydroxycut etc. The magazine I like the least is Ms. Fitness and that is about the only that I will not buy anymore. It just seems to be a repeat month after month and does not have contain much in it.

While there some things I do not like about certain mags, I tend to take what I find useful and leave the rest.

I have never checked out Men's Fitness but just may have to when I am having a "new fitness mag" withdrawal moment.

Hi Debbie!

The article I read about four years ago was "Stop counting fat grams". It was a great article. I had been counting fat grams and gained 10 lbs. I was forgetting that ALL calories count. I also learned from it that I could exercise and eat 2100 calories a day and loose weight. I'd always known about women going on 1200 calorie diets to loose weight and I knew I couldn't do that. Now I know so much more about nutrition and exercise. I find myself lecturing people on the dangers of low cal diets and high protien diets, telling them they need to exercise. They really don't like to hear that last part. They all want some magic pill. Well enough blabbing. I could go on and on! Susan

Fitness Magazines

Hi Lora,
I read Shape, Fitness, Self, Womens Sports & Fitness, and Sports Illustrated for Women. I've tried Fit, Oxygen, and Muscle & Fitness Hers as well.
Oxygen and Muscle & Fitness Hers weren't for me, too much focus on fitness competetions and supplements, although M&F Hers had a few interesting articles in it.
Fit just doesn't ever have anything I haven't read in the others, though I do buy it occasionally.
The things I like the most in Shape are the success stories and recipe makeovers. Fitness also has good success stories and I usually like their investigative reports, one got me to go out and buy a heart rate monitor. Self has a good fitness section in it that I really enjoy, although their models never have muscles!
Womens Sports & Fitness and SI for Women both have lots of articles on women athletes that I enjoy reading.
Let us know what you decide to try and how you like it!

You Are Soo Right Susan!

Everyone does want a magic pill. I know for myself that dieting DOES NOT work. I find that if I just cut back on my calories (not to extreme) and exercise , I may not have the perfect body, but I know I look better then if I didn't do it. I know I am very healthy. I am always faithful to exercise. (I thank God that He gave me a love for it!

)Well, now I'm babbling--I just wanted to say again--GOOD FOR YOU!!

I'm thankful too...

I love to exercise and I hear other people say how they hate it. I'm so glad that I want to. A girl at work just today said she hated exercise, and all she liked was eating and sleeping. Well, I love to eat and sleep too, but wouldn't that feel awful to not MOVE! Makes me want to go for a run when I hear people talk like that! Susan

wow, talk about timing

Carrie,

I just got the current issue of Cook's Illustrated magazine (I am an obsessive fan of this one, since they explain the whole process of trying out their recipes to get the "best" one) and they had an article on "the best bowl of oatmeal". They used Irish oats, otherwise known as steel cut oats.

Basically, these are oats that are sliced up a bit instead of being subjected to the "rolling" process of regular oatmeal here. They explain this much better than I do, and I've seen this mag in stores, so you may want to check the article out. According to the article, the oatmeal produced by this type of oat is creamy without being soggy. They also suggest buying from the bulk section in the whole foods store since the regular grocery store brands they tried were all stale.

Karen (who was a heretic according to this article in that she ate "instant" apple pie oatmeal for breakfast)

My 2 cents

Although I'm interested in fitness, I don't consider myself too much of a "sport." (Too many traumatic episodes in junior high school gym class, I guess.) At any rate, I am--surprisingly--enjoying Women's Sports and Fitness more than my other mags (i.e. Fitness--which sometimes seems a bit fluffy to me). The articles in WSF are wide-ranging in subject, very well-written, engaging, and inspiring. Sometimes I'm tempted to just skim articles about mountain climbing/dirt biking/sports writing, etc. since they don't have a great deal to do with my day-to-day life. But once I read the first few sentences--I'm hooked. And I have actually been inspired to try new activities. I just tried snowboarding after years of being a skier, and I love it! I think this magazine is definitely worth a look. Have fun!
